What a day....

As some of you know, I have an antique clock collection. Well, last night, I noticed one of my clocks was “clicking” and the second hand sticking; of course the time was off. A CLEAR sign that the rotor is in bad shape.

Scratch One clock

A little while later, I spilled some dirt on my floor, went and grabbed my Dyson cordless, pressed the trigger: Click. I tried a hundred things, the thing is just.... dead.

Scratch One Vacuum cleaner

A while later... I walked in to my kitchen and heard a funny noise... ANOTHER one of my clocks, this time my pride and joy from 1928, was ALSO making a funning noise. Something I have heard before and a DEFINITIVE sign that the motor is about to fail. I spoke with an expert in Oregon and got an estimate for an ove-haul....

Scratch the SECOND clock.

THEN, this evening, I put something in to my trash compactor, press the button, and the motor starts. A second later every electical socket in the kitchen goes dead. I reset the circuit breaker, push the button again, and POP! Same thing. The crusher is all the way down so I can’t even open the bin. The motor is defiitely shot.

Scratch One trash compactor.

ONE day. FOUR things broken Heck, with the way my luck is going today I am liable to break this Ipad I am typ- - ————— ——

I completely feel your pain and hope you don't think I sent you my 'sickness' for 'broke' stuff, Paul...

This is my luck:
In two days, I had 2 out of 4 new appliances delivered with damages; the battery in my car blew acid all over the top of the battery and fried the wiring harness; all 6 batteries in my golf cart basically dead - wouldn't charge either, two of my favorite lamps' switches have stopped working. Gave my vacuum cleaner away, stopped picking up doggie hair no matter what I tinkered on it. Other stuff, too, .... anyway, can't do anything but keep going and looking up!.

Hope things turn around for you. Good Luck!

Blessings,
DM

It's ok. Think of it this way, the odds of more stuff breaking is a very large number, so you can enjoy break free things for the next decade.

Do not touch any of your watches until this run of bad luck is over.

The last thing you want to be doing is getting watch servicing done on top of all of that.

Go to bed is probably the best thing to do and don't touch, look or listen to anything along the way

Paul wired his own house. So I’d say the probability of catastrophe remains pretty high.

Tuff night! Your disposal should be on its own breaker Did you add it yourself and wire it off of one of your kitchen outlets?

Sorry to hear it, Paul. Days like that suck but at least you've got a lot to be thankful for and these things (although stressful AF) will be resolved before you know it! Better days will come!

You know Jim, you are right, and no it’s not. I put the trash compactor in myself years ago, and run it to a standard plug that has some other minor things on it, nothing pulling a lot of amps, and protected it with TWO (2) high-end surge protectors before it even hit the outlet. Actually, it was one of the surge protectors that was popping, not the CB so no interuption with house current. I have heard it should be on it’s own Circuit and I have an unused 20 amp breaker, but how do I hook that up? How can I dedicate a single outlet to it’s own CB in my box?

If the breaker is open you just run new wire to it. Better yet, you hire a pro to run new wire to it.

Quit making sense Abdullah! So... what I am thinking (which usually gets me in to trouble) is that all the outlets in the kitchen are live, with wires to the box. So all I would have to do is find the wires that go to that particular outlet, and switch them from the curcuit breaker they are currently on to the one that’s wide open. Simple right?

I’ll post a new thread and pictures after the fire department leaves

All you have to do is leave the outlet alone, then run brand new wire from the compactor to the open breaker.

It’s your project, and you can manage as you prefer, but if I were doing it I would open the main breaker to the house before I started fussing inside the breaker box.

Oh heck ya! When I re-did my panel and most other times I have worked electrical I shut off ALL power to my condo, there is a main switch in the box that supplies our building.

I don’t know what I’ll do. First thing is I have to buy another trash compactor

Only if the existing circuit is a dedicated home run to the panel now. But I bet it’s daisy-chained with at least one other outlet. You can tone the wires at the panel and then check other kitchen outlets to make sure.

But I agree with Abdullah - if you’re not sure then I see a visit with My. Sparky in your future.

You are right Paul, there is no way it is home run-ed, I am sure it is chained to other outlets in the kitchen. Sigh.... Well, nothing to worry about until I get another trash compactor.

High draw appliances should always be on their own unshared breaker (e.g. dryer, electric stove, electric water heater, etc.). Hardwiring appliances into an outlet circuit pretty much guarantees you'll eventually overload the circuit.

Paul - in all my years of military flying I had an agreement with the local tradesmen (plumbers, electricians, etc)

I told them if they would agree to not try and fly high performance military aircraft, I would agree not try to be an electrician, plumber, etc...

They all thought it was a fair deal, and it's worked well for many years.

Food for thought...

It’s funny you should bring this up, in all my years of military flying I couldn’t replace an outlet, it wasn’t until after I learned about being a “handyman”.
