Just out of curiosity: are there any Millennials on here?

With all of the articles and theories that the Millennial Generation does not value mechanical watches, are there any Millennials on here and if so, what do you own?

I’m an 89 which I think is technically a millennial by definition. But wouldn’t lump myself into the same category as the millennial born in the late 90s / 2000s. Very different ethics, influences and mentality

The Millennial Generation is the first one which has claims that they will be the impetus for decline in mechanical watch sales.

Hence, the topic.

I'm 28 so fall within that category. I own a blnr and have recently added a dj41.

I'm not sure where the obsession with watches comes from, certainly not from my family as none of them have any interest in luxury watches.

My wife’s nephew, early 40s, has his first Rolex. It’s an older yellow gold one on a alligator strap.

I just turned 38 earlier this month. I’ve seen some studies that claim the millennial generation started in 1980 and others that start it somewhere between 1982-1984.

So in some I am a millennial. In most I’m the very tail end of generation X.

But regardless, I love Watches, so...

I just turned 27. Watches have interested me since I was a teenager and collecting is party due to some the Rolex watches that have been passed down to me. My dad gave me his vintage DJ silver linen dial when I graduated college. I bought my first professional line Rolex a year after that. When I got a new job a few years later (big move in my career) my grandfather gave me his vintage YG OP from the late 50s. Since then, I've added an ALS Saxonia to my collection (self-gift for finishing paying off my student loans). I'm currently contemplating picking up a BLNR (pending all the Basel news this upcoming week) while I continue to wait patiently for a SS Daytona C white dial.

A lot of my friends think I am absolutely crazy for spending all this time (no pun intended) and money on watches. They vary in views when it comes to watches...many don't wear one at all, some view it strictly as a style accessory and have a limited collection of cheaper watches, some think an Apple watch is all they need, and a few have one Rolex (mainly Subs) mainly for the sake of just having a Rolex. A fair number of them have some familiarity when it comes to Rolex watches but are clueless if I start throwing in PP, AP, or ALS models into the mix for discussion. Overall, I think the general fear for the mechanical watch industry is a bit overdone. From my perspective, a lot of people my age don't outright reject the idea of spending money on a luxury/mechanical watch...it's more like they just don't view it as a priority in their 20s. In my brief professional career in finance thus far, the % of people my age more interested in luxury watches and % of people actually wearing them is much higher.

I have 4 kids ages 23-35 who respect the tradition and name of Rolex. At least 2 of them would value owning a Rolex. My 25 year old son is a true fan of the Submariner SS watches. For the others, I believe if I passed down a Rolex to each of them, they would value it forever. For millennial males, I believe there is a strong feeling toward luxury items, including watches, as part of realizing achievement. All that being said, I'm not sure if Rolex is the only and utmost thing on their minds.

I will turn 24 tomorrow (if all goes well), so birthyear 1994 makes me a millennial. I study watchmaking and am currently halfway through my graduation internship at a Rolex service center, go figure

That's awesome! Out of curiosity, what made you interested in studying watchmaking and working towards this? Is it a result of someone in your family or entirely due to your own interests (or a mix of both)?

It will be interesting to see how many Millennials will ever switch from an Apple Watch to a mechanical one.

The issue w the smartwatches is that once you start wearing and getting used to one, you sort of feel naked when your phone rings and your wrist doesn’t vibrate. Lol. In other words, it is pretty addictive, IMO, but I will never give up my Rolex and wear them as well.

Entirely my own interest. Initially started (8 years ago) when I saw a Rolex AD in Liechtenstein, got curious and next thing you know we are here.

Millennial here but always told my mind is much older. Not sure where my watch obsession came from but in my early teens I started to love and buy watches, nice ones at that. Then I sold them all young and dumb and just got back into the game. I think the watch industry will be fine imho.

Sear happy early bday & good luck on the prosrionak side.
