What's the general consensus on Vacheron & Constantin?

I was trying on some watches the other day, and the gentleman behind the counter handed me a Vacheron & Constantin 49150 Overseas Chronograph.

Thought it was absolutely stunning, and fit perfect.

I don't hear the brand mentioned all too often - was curious as to what the overall opinions of the brand were here?

Thanks!

I've got a 49150 in black and I just adore it. White looks amazing as well. Very high-quality finishing and craftsmanship, definitely one of my faves.

I think Vacheron Constantin is the oldest continuously operating watch company in existence. It's the quietest member of the "holy trinity" of Swiss brands, which may or may not be a good thing depending on your point of view, but no one can dispute that they make lovely watches. They're not a one watch company like AP has essentially become and while Patek formerly was superior in terms of movement finishing, VC has upped their game in the last decade or two and started to come out with some reasonably priced pieces (for VC, at least, and compared to Patek) while, simultaneously, Patek's quality has gone down as their production numbers (well over double that of VC) have gone up, so much so that I think VC these days has higher standards than Patek for most production pieces. Other than Lange, which doesn't make sport watches, VC currently makes my favorite dress watches.

As for the Overseas, it's the nicest looking of all the Genta designs, in my opinion (although I'm honestly not a fan of any of them), and the quality is very good. Resale is not as good as the Nautilus, Aquanaut, or Royal Oak, but that's also reflected in new street prices.

Correction: Overseas is not a Genta design.

Thank you. I stand corrected, then. I guess it's an "inspired by Genta" design then. Perhaps that's why it is my favorite, haha.

I have a very high opinion of the brand as a whole but prefer their dress pieces. The overseas doesn’t appeal to me.

I bought a 2nd gen for a brief period this year but decided it had a bit too much going on, the 3rd gen with clean stunning deep blue dial would be the one I'd get now, but as ever you need a great price and VC UK hate to discount much so catch 22.

That's funny when the Hysek watches I've seen look like casino slot machines.

Prefer their dress models. The sports line, especially the latest models, do nothing for me.

I own a second generation Overseas Chrono and believe it is one of the best luxury stainless steel chronos on the market. I have found it to be reliable and durable. The big date at 12, oversize chronograph minute counter and extreme legibility give it a unique look. That said, the third generation loses most of these features.

i prefer the current generation... that date window on the chronograph blue dial ruins it though. The black dial, white subdial however is awesome

The current Overseas Ultra-Thin is finishing wise the best watch out there (beveling, bracelet polishing and brushing, bracelet with micro-adjustment)

Cornes De Vache and Complete Calendar are also nice historic models.

The state of the brand? They falling deep atm. Collaborating with Hodinkee, uninspired Fiftysix collection.

They only things that keeps them alive among high end collectors are more their Historiques line and their customized watches from the Cabinotiers Atelier.

The original 222 was, which did actually use the Overseas model designation — that came with the introduction of the 1st Gen 42040.

What maybe trips up most people is that Genta designed the IWC Ingenieur SL, which rarely every gets mentioned in the same breath as Royal Oak, Nautilus, and the Overseas.

I like VC even though I don't own any. The Historiques and Harmony line are my personal favorites that I would like to own one day. I'm not a big fan of the Overseas though. They just never looked right on my wrist when I tried them.

Can't say I like how they look, but I know they are very important in the watch world.

I tried on the Overseas a couple times already, once recently as well, and just felt it wasn’t right for me. I really wanted to like it because they’re pretty readily available but I couldn’t imagine it on me. With that said, I know they hold a place high in the hierarchy and I do like their Historiques line. Would definitely consider it when I’m looking for a dress piece.

What's the general consensus on Vacheron & Constantin?

I love Vacheron and have a Gen 2 Overseas Chrono. I was fortunate to have had a half day private tour of their operations a few months ago and came away extremely impressed.

On the Chrono, it’s without a doubt a far nicer watch than a Daytona. In my view, it’s nicer than the AP equivalents - but that comparison comes down more to personal taste.

I had a 49150 Blue on leather, I flipped it to make way for a grail and miss it dearly. I’d take another on a bracelet tomorrow. It wears smaller than the size suggests and unlike the other trinity sports it’s absolutley bombproof

I have the Overseas which I really like. Comes with three bands which takes seconds to change so it's great for travel if you have different events to go to. The Fifty Six is "relatively" inexpensive and looks incredible, pictures do not do it justice. I'm hoping to get the Historiques 1942 next. I'm not going to sell so I'm not worried about resale.

Sure pictures don't do justice, still looks like Baume et Mercier Clifton PC ahahaha.
This brand is over after the next crisis if they don't change anything. You can see they struggle hard if they make hodinkee special editions. And no, Fiftysix is definitely not the solution.
Even Patek struggles, thus they started to make an instagram account – they noticed that social media is an important factor today and they can't do without.
