Correct me if I’m wrong...
But the local boutique told me “insider” info that the remaining stock of their moon watches both the hesalite and sapphire sandwiches are their last stock as omega is discontinuing the 1861 and 1863 movement. I just wanted to ask you family is this info true? To me, it doesn’t seem too sure as not too many people are talking about it nor are the stock of the watches online are gone. I understand our focus right now, as is mine, is on more important things like our jobs and our health but I’m not feeling that “buzz” that everyone is out buying moonwatches all of a sudden.

The 1861 is being phased out and replaced by the 3861 and Omega's goal is by end of year 2020. The current Speedy moon with the 1861 will soon be no more.
I don't know about the 1863. |

Ah. I see. That has me thinking...should one get the 1861 now as it will be a classic or go for the new 3861 (new movement, better accuracy, etc.).

I say go with what you like. The 3861 is going to drive the price of a hesalite speedy up quite a bit so if you want brand new, jumping on the 1861 may not be a bad idea for cost reasons. I don't see classic coming into the equation on the 1861 any time soon. It's a beast, don't get me wrong, but there are zillions of them out there.

Gosh, it strikes me that what we're discussing here could actually be the end of an era. Yes, the Speedmaster started life in 1957 as a motorsport watch, but its role in the world of watches changed the minute NASA chose it for space missions. Assuming the current one goes out of production, and the new one isn't flight qualified, I guess that will be the end of the Speedmaster's long reign as the astronaut's watch.
Maybe I'll like the new one when it comes, but I'm ever letting go of my Speedmaster Professional |

1861 is not amy more classic than the 861 before it. As said above buy what you like. I have owned multiple Speedmasters through the years but recently decided to get away from hand wound watches and sold my 3592 numbered edition. Who knows if would ever buy another Speedy in the furure; if do would probably be an automatic

Hard to say, but that flight qualification will be a necessity and the new movement will be flight qualified. The movement is impressive, there is no doubt. But for me the farther we get from the 321, the less dna in my mind it has. The 321, 1/861 have logged thousands of hours in space and the new movement will have to earn its strips for me.

I can’t see there being a Rolex style run when a movement is replaced like on the Batman, but the values of Speedys have crept up on Chrono24. Given the huge numbers out there, values are unlikely to spike, but if you want to buy new, now is a good a time as ever if you have disposable cash. I do think they will change the bracelet back to the classic that the Apollo 11 had. Will also be interested to see what happens to the Submariner when the movement changes. Very similar story.
