My $0.02,

It comes down to self-expression. When I think of a watch, I think of Rolex. And there's a reason for that. Hans Wilsdorf quite literally "INVENTED" the wrist-watch as we know it today.

Rolex (of old... not necessarily new... Don't like the 6 digits much at all, save for a few), was about functionality, design, precision-engineering and fine craftsmanship. In my mind they subscribe to the German mentality when it comes to automobile manufacturing - over-engineered products that are built like tanks! They're serious! And as a person, so am I.

To me, wearing a rolex is the embodiment of who and what I am as a person. It is class, sophistication, precision, seriousness, ambition... and being "the" brand that invented so many of the watch complications and designs we love, it is the PURIST!

If not for these, it would just be another Veblen good in my eyes. I don't view my pieces as such.

The feel of the ti Fifty Fathom on the sailcloth strap was a sea change for me. No one would ever know what this watch is or costs and I love it entirely.
