Charge for additional link(s)?

I am ready to purchase my first Rolex. It will be a Datejust 41 with a stainless steel oyster bracelet. I have a large wrist and will need an additional link(s). Should I expect to pay up for them from an AD?

Negcraig, I purchased a DJ41 Blue stick dial with Oyster earlier this year from an AD. I did end up needing 1 extra link and I was charged for it. I think it was $80-100? I am sure if I could have schmoozed my way into getting it but.. Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda, Didn't

I bought a DayDate 40 on this site. Had to go to an AD to get an extra rose gold link. I believe it was almost $700. They wouldn't negotiate.

I was at my AD over the weekend and somehow this conversation came up and they do charge for extra links.

I think if you pay retail, the AD should include the extra links at N/C. If you're getting a decent discount, then it would be nice, but I wouldn't expect it.

It may also depend on your relationship (if any) with your AD. When I got my DD40, I needed 2-3 extra links. I have a good relationship with my AD and they offered to include 2 links at n/c. If I needed a third, they would charge me wholesale on the third. Since i was already getting a good discount, I was very happy with that.

I bought a Rolex at an AD and needed an extra link. They unscrewed one off a Yacht Master for me (sorry to whoever picked up a YM with a missing link ). Another AD gave me a discount on a DJ, but I had to pay $75 Canadian for an extra link. I have also bought extra links for two SS Rolexes that I bought second hand. Strangely my Sub C bracelet is not tight enough at full retractions of the Glidelock and my Skydweller fit perfectly without any adjustment.

7 3/4” wrist for reference.

Bought a Rolex at cost extra link free
Bought a Tudor at 10# off had to buy link separately at £52. So depends on how much your cutting into profit margins

Depends:
- if you are a good client, no charge
- if you are not, charge

But there are exceptions on this general rule.

For me its simple, you buy a watch to wear. So if the bracelet is too small, it's their Job to adapt it, and it should be without charge.

Unless your wrist is abnormally big due to extreme weight imho

I needed two extra links for my SD43, the AD did say that there would be a charge ( I believe she said £80 per link ) but when I came back to get them fitted she waved the charge but did charge me £20 for fitting them. I didn’t argue

I also needed 2 extra links for my new SD43 - cost me ZAR800-00 each, about $120-00 for the 2 links.

I purchased a half link for my LVc to get my perfect fit. Note I said I "purchased" it. The AD wouldn't budge on price or even remotely consider a freebie. This was my first watch purchase from them.

Based on my relationship and purchase history with my new AD where I moved, I'm pretty sure I could get a link if I needed it discounted or free unless it was a PM link.

Sorry to say the days where extra links being free are all but gone. Some ADs may still give them away but I would expect them to be few and far between. Rolex charge them, they charge you. I can certainly see them being offered in lieu of discounting a PM piece but being honest the 'D-word' is dying as well; little need with the state of supply/demand.

This is not Rolex unique. Many brands now charge if you require a shorter or longer strap on a new purchase.

That is the nature of luxury goods though; they are a luxury....

Would those expecting unlimited free extra links be OK with the AD keeping extras if they sized a watch down? Of course not.

The watch for sale is a standard number of links, more are extra cost. I can eat 12 McNuggats, my buddy likes 5, but we both accept that the 6 PC meal will only have 6 in it.

I can't understand this issue. I have never been charged for extra steel links by any Rolex AD, with the caveat that I usually shop in Europe. In fact I always ask for extra links and get them, either at time of purchase or later. Never been asked to pay for them, the AD's never even suggested to me that I'd have to pay.

I understand that this contradicts the experience of 95% of people on here.

A different AD mentality in Europe about providing good service perhaps. Or maybe you were simply paying enough for your watches that they had no trouble throwing in a freebie as a gesture of customer service. But, the AD *is* paying for those links -- Rolex doesn't provide them for free.

As noted above, if I were paying full price at an AD, I'd hope to see them tossed in for free (for SS, obviously). If I'm getting a meaningful discount, though, I'd consider myself lucky to get anything beyond the base watch kit.

Thanks for the responses. I said to the AD that when they quoted the watch that I assumed that it would be a watch that would fit me. They said that the price was for the "timepiece" . I am getting a 5% discount from list. They made what I took as a good faith compromise and offered 1 link on the house and any additional at $60 each. I thought meeting in the middle was fair. Thanks again. I will join the club soon!

Bought a half link for my tt sub c. Blusey. Cost me about $250. But worth it as it now fits centered. SS subs had the half link. TT did not.
