5167 versus Smurf Trade and Response

Good morning TRF!

I am confused. I have a Patek 5167a on Steel Bracelet with full box and papers from 2013 and it was serviced in 2015 before warranty expired.

I also purchased the black rubber and deployant from AD. I also purchased brown rubber from AD so I pretty much have 3 watches. It is great. However with a PAM 112, a Rolex 1675 I have 3 sports watches with dark dials and interested in a blue dial.

Anyway, I keep seeing prices from dealers from $22k to $25k for used and preowned 5167s with half my accessories and then I saw someone on TRF selling a Smurf for $22.5k cash. I thought I would see if a 1 to 1 trade was even fair.

His response was as follows "Good morning. I’d certainly consider a trade but checking other offered prices on eBay and chrono24, I couldn’t get to 1 for 1."

At this point with prices as they are and rising, isn't a 1 to 1 trade is fair right? Unless people are buying at a significant discount to list prices on TRF? Can someone please let me know how much negotiating room there REALLY is with dealers and TRF prices?

This stuff is confusing as hell, I once thought TRF was a good place to find nice deals at fair prices - however it looks like it is being taken over by dealers and dealer wanna-bes that are endlessly flipping watches for profit.

Any suggestions would be helpful. Maybe its easier to just get cash and then buy.

These people aren’t fair; they’re trying to shake every last coin from you. The month before I got my AP summer edition, greys I knew kept offering me the watch at 62. I had a chance to buy 2 at retail suddenly so I figured I’d keep one and flip the other. When I called those same greys, they offered me 45. Apparently the watch had really cooled off that month. It’s all a joke.

you will never get the going selling price in trade value or in a sale to a dealer. Their margin is offering you the lowest possible number. So no, your watch isnt worth 25k. It may sell for that but you won't get that much selling yourself and a dealer will offer you less too.

I wouldn't do that trade anyway.

I had my hesitation as well for a 1 to 1 trade. I actually feel the 5167 is worth more than a Smurf today especially with the extra accessories.

How do you folks find good private collectors to do "fair trades" with minimal profit motives? I would love to trade my 5711 white up to a blue or a 5712 etc but I cannot seem to find a deal that is "fair".

Your best bet is to try to sell the 5167 on your own. Selling or trading with a dealer is more convenient but you will get a lot less.
I don't do trades, I try to sell then use the funds to get the piece I want.

Ahh, the spread strikes again! Dealers are in it to make money, even though the "market price" is equivalent, they need to make a cut on each direction a piece goes.

From my experience inquiring with a few greys about selling popular BNIB Rolexes is that they're paying retail or below and marking them up significantly - they're keeping most of the premium and it's hard for small timers to really make anything.

My general practice is to sell on my own and then use the cash to buy. I've never gotten an attractive trade proposition, whether solicited or unsolicited.

Watchfinder, biggest used dealer in UK and probably Europe now, nickname is Spreadfinder.

Got to do private deals to get fair value.

You have to figure in a profit for a TS. When I have done straight trades or sales to trusted sellers on here I have always allowed for them to make money on it.

I think that seller may have done you a favor. Who can really predict, but if the 5711 is unobtainable, the 5167 is going to get a bump. How much remains to be seen.

If you really want a blue dial, I'd strongly consider the FPJ Chronometre Bleu too. It's a lovely piece, and has some potential to increase somewhat in value as well.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I really do enjoy the 5167 especially having both bracelet and 2 rubber colors; maybe I can get a green and now an orange rubber : )

Thinking I'll give it a few months - not in a hurry, I too think the 5167 is going to get a bump too with the new Chronograph.

I've never used a dealer and never will. I don't see the need, but I'm fortunate to be in the large urban area with lots of watch buyers. Even still I've many times got on a plane to sell or buy a watch both domestically and internationally. Not paying the spread to a dealer pays for more than ones flights and hotel usually.

Think your PP with all those bands worth more than Smurf
