how do we feel about this dial?
On the verge of buying, however there's a tiny piece of missing white on the crown. Is this likely to get much worse? Would it bother you?

It's not going to get worse as long as watchmakers keep from marking it. That is likely what originally happened. Everything else seems pretty great. You can potentially haggle them down a but if the missing paint isnt mentioned in the listing

Wouldn’t bother me. That dial looks great, IMO. As far as haggling it down for those tiny marks....I wouldn’t count on a discount for that. Just part of the aging, charm, etc...
Perhaps those were there from a service, but typically that’s not an area that gets damaged...mostly chips, scratches, etc..on the edges from servicing. |

sweet dial, wouldn't bother me in the slightest, in fact it's just these kind of small quirks that we see on vintage watches that attracted me to them in the first place. Back in the day there was a lot less automation in the manufacture which made for less consistency and more character (IMO!)

Good! I really like the watch, someone on another forum got me concerned about the rest of it falling off. It’s gonna be a daily wearer for sure, not gonna live in a safe.

mine is my daily wearer and the watch that gets the most wrist time. A red sub is like an old leather jacket, it just keeps getting better the more you wear it!!

Nice-looking red Sub. It depends how much OCD you have. That tiny bit of missing paint probably wouldn't bug me that much, but it could be a nagging (and irrational) issue in the back of my mind.

If this bothers you then I’d say vintage watches aren’t for you. This dial is pretty much perfect. Even zoomed to the max on my phone, it only shows as a tiny dot. It’s a slight loss of paint on the matte dial of a tool watch - I wouldn’t lose any sleep over it at all.

I think the dial is fine but on the other hand you have noticed it and you are asking what other people think. This tells me it probably bothers you. If yes, continue looking. You will not be less bothered about a details just because others aren’t.

I think the chip was negligently done when servicing it...doesn't look like it will be worse over time. Looks pretty good to me (there's some dust on the 1' marker but I guess it's on the outside?)

I’m ok with it as long as the rest doesn’t fall off

That is a remarkably beautiful dial, but with age will become more brittle over time and flake.

There is a repair which can be made. If properly documented you’ll correct the issue and not tank the value.
