Could have been for anything.
I always told my kids "Never forget that there are savages out there who would take your life without a moments hesitation if you have something that they want or offend them in some way."
This poor man was just unlucky.

Watches are definitely a big target at the moment in London ( West End in particular)

There was a guy sitting outside a bar in Knightsbrige the other day that had his Skydweller stolen by a couple of punks on mopeds armed with knives

It's easy money for them. They just take the watch straight to a few of the notoriously suspect jewelers in Hatton Garden who'll buy them for cash right away

I think it's easy to forget that there are a lot of desperate people around. From their perspective it's probably quite offensive to have something on your wrist which is the equivalent of a year's rent. It doesn't help that the police in London have suffered outrageous cuts in recent years.

I don't wear an expensive watch when going to London anymore. Not worth the risk. I don't take cash either, pay for everything on card and keep your phone in your pocket rather than walking around busy streets with it on show.

Make things difficult to steal and they won't get stolen, make them easy to steal and you'll be robbed.

This is such a shame. In early 1997, I started traveling to London for monthly Board meetings, stayed in the Hyde Park Intercontinental hotel and walked to South Audley Street day or night. I felt perfectly safe. I wore a YG DayDate. I enjoyed long walks in my off time. I thought London was a wonderful, beautiful, safe city with great beer and even greater people. I left that company in 2004. The last couple of trips, I got hassled on the street. A few whacks with my umbrella and a loud yell drove the guys away. The makeup of London’s population has changed and so has its safety. So sad.
