Originally, the old inserts should go higher towards the plexi than the newer service ones, making them more attractive in my opinion because they are masking more of the straight sides of the plexi.

Unfortunately many of those old inserts have been flatten out a bit to better fit into the bezel ring.
So in case you should be looking for an old insert, make sure that it has not been flatten out too much.

At last! somebody who understands what I was trying to say.
Exactly as I was pointing out....The insert on my drsd slopes up vs the insert on my 5513 that is flat

was the dome a rare thing ? or on all the subs ? and when did it stop?

Here's my 5512 with original dome and what I believe is an unpolished case. And, yes, the lugs were thick on the 5512, unless they were polished, of course.
