New Wheels

No, not a new car, just new wheels

I've always disliked the wheels that came on my 540, so have just bought some used wheels to put on it. They are much sportier than what I have now, and the tires are going to be bigger as well. Right now I have 225 width 16 inch tires, and will have 235's on the front, 255's on the rear, and all at 17 inches. With these wheels, the car will have a much more sporty appearance I think!

Very nice wheels, Al.

Will the new 17" tires be sufficient in snow, or do you have a set of winter wheels?

Very nice Al! It'll transform the car nicely. Peter, I'll take a stab and guess Al does have a set of snows on steel rims.

Sorry John, you guessed wrong! First off, the car sits in my garage up on blocks with a nice cover on it from the time the first snow flies, until it's all long gone and the roads have been washed of the salt by spring rains (I've done this with most of my cars, even back to my cheesy looking gold on black Trams Am....then the Jaguar...then my first BMW....now this one).

Secondly, steel wheels were not available for the 540 last time I checked - too much torque for steel, so you would have to use alloys. According to my mechanic, BMW tested steel wheels and managed to rip the hub out of the center and tear the wheel apart (no idea if this is true, but he's someone I trust, so it might be).

If I ever get to the point where I drive this car in the snow, I will have the alloy wheels that came on it to use for snow tires. In the mean time, the wife and I share her 1989 325ix all winter - the all wheel drive is fantastic in the snow!

Well, you may laugh, but I wasn't coming back from NZ/Oz this winter and having to deal with this!

Anyway, to answer John's question (which I did actually answer even before he asked it) regarding what I drive in the winter, on the left is my wife's BMW 325ix - 1989 with somewhere near 300,000 km's on it. On the right is my car, 1998 540i.

Another shot, just of mine in front of the house......

Nice hoose Al. It has the same or similar type brick as my last house. We actually called it 'desert camoflage chic'.
