A dream came true, pawnshop story

I hit the pawn shops around town often. I have a few hobbies (watches, guitar, shooting, hi fi) and you never know what you'll find.

Of course the dream of dreams is to find a Rolex at a bargain price has always been in the back of my mind but in these days of the handheld knowledge of the universe, the chances if that are greatly diminished.

On the way to our Father's Day dinner I was running early so I detoured to a pawn shop that had yielded me some great bargains 8n the past. I hit the jewelry counter and nothing. Nada. Oh well

Two aisles over is a junk section with miscellaneous cheap crap and lots and lots of cheap watches. 2 of these cheap watches were "Rolexes". One the absolute worst Canal Street Sub copy I've ever seen. Next to that was this 16013. Tagged at $150.00. My heart started pounding out of my chest. I could see through the glass this was no Canal Street garbage. I waited patiently, asked to see it. Immediately said I'll take it...and asked if I could put it on. Didn't want someone else to see it.

The bracelet is tired and worn but be assured, I am NOT complaining. It's a 14k model that matches the 16013 my father bought new in 1984.

I'm still in shock over this one. I've literally dreamt this scenario. CHECK THE PAWN SHOPS. it can happen.

Believe me, I always try to get a better price, but I've learned a lesson in situations such as this. You ask for a better price, then the manager gets involved and looks at the watch....party could be over when the mistake is seen. I kept my cool and said I was in a hurry for Father's Day and needed to boogie.

Wow!

And that's the beauty of a DJ.
May be a common Rolex but it's dependability is a like seeing an old familiar friend.

It's face is enough to bring you joy

Great story, and congrats! One of my concerns about pawn shop watches is whether they're stolen.

Amazing, begs the question... what kind of pawn shop sells a Rolex for $150 though, jeez! Had they just opened! I’d be visiting there more often.

I think it’s a case of they thought it was fake to be honest, if there was underhand dishonesty around stolen here the watch still wouldn’t be $150!

Perhaps, but these places often follow a "don't tell, don't ask" policy. There's never a guarantee items have not been stolen, not at the pawn shops I've been to anyway. Maybe the shop was suspicious about the watch and wanted to low-key the sale by putting it in the "junk' section. Because when you think about it, why would a fake Rolex be even $150? Presumably, it would be much less, like $50 or even $20, no?

Still, probably worth the gamble, assuming you're OK with the possibility it was stolen (no moral judgments). I just wouldn't ever have an RSC service a Rolex I bought at a pawn shop. They have a stolen-watch database, of course.

That's exactly what's confusing to me, too, Aaron.

I've bought a 'fake' rolex which turned out to be real too. It was a two tone date, not datejust, but still, people see them and just think they are fakes. Its odd, because I knew on sight the Date was real.
