Here's what a 36mm looks like on a 7.5 inches wrist. I wear watch sizes ranging from 27mm to 42mm. The 36mm looks nearly perfect as I think if they made a 38mm, that would be perfect.

36 was waaaaaay too small. It wears large, but compared to the 40, we’ll there is no comparison. 40 all day.

If you are going for roman number dial, 40mm has nicer looking sharp font.. wish my wrist fits 40mm =/

I had a DD 36mm YG , Romans, white dial. When I bought I had the option to buy the DD 40, about 3 years ago but decided on the classic 36. And loved it —-it was recognized very often as: “I love your President!”....Three years later, I traded it to get same model but no the DD40, I needed the extra feel
of added weight. They are both elegant, classic , and recognizable. I could wear either size. That wasn’t the issue. Either size is a great timepiece to have. I wear mine casually , and dressy —- looks great anyway.

Most of my watches are 40mm but i find the 36mm DayDate ok on a 7.5" wrist and a good size for casual wear.
I'm not sure where 'recognizability' comes in? Is it even a word? The DJ 41 wears much bigger but it's only a shade over 3mm more.

I've tried them both on and felt like the 36 was more comfortable. They are dense watches being PM. The 40 definitely has more presence though.

Another vote for the DD40. Great proportions, weight, and wrist presence.

Also, forgot to add, if you want people to know what watch you’re wearing or concerned the 36 won’t turn as many heads, people will recognize the bracelet regardless of case size. I can spot a President from across a crowded room, as I’m sure most on here can. Cheers.

This can go on forever. Just buy the one that fits you the best. I don’t wear my watch for others to see. I wear it, because I like wearing it. If the 36 looks to small go with the 40 and if the 40 looks to big go 36. I can’t imagine Rolex discontinuing either the the 36 or the 40. Having said that, you did notice they discontinued the DD II, what does that tell you if anything. Just enjoy wearing your new watch. I don’t think you can go wrong either way.

Just buy the 40mm man.
Its the best proportioned Rolex DD made till date. The bracelet, dial, bezel and even the case contours are perfect. |

Unless you have less than a 6.25 inch wrist - go with the 40 no question!

36! No question! To me it’s a choice of looking like old money or new money.

I had the 18238 and loved it for a year. I ended up selling it and getting the DD40. Never looked back.

I know a tonne of guys on here that have done that - you guys know who you are. LOL So, from saving you the hassle just get the 40 from day one. Any dial you want and when you get bored of that dial RSC will swap it for you. |

Not that, dd went through a series of updates in sizing before finally creating a dd40. When the subs are heading to 41, getting the 40 may prolly makes more sense for a man as the ladies are going for the 36?
Well having said that, I witnessed a female watch buyer getting the 40 for herself. Buy what you like and suits you. |

I guess I’m old fashioned I still think a sports watch should be a 40mm sub and a dress watch should be a 36mm yellow gold president.

I like 36mm for that style, but agree with others who say if you want a roman dial the larger size can look nicer, my wife went 31mm as she wanted romans and it didn't look as nice on the smaller model.
Good luck, no wrong choices in this decision. |

Yep. Op, trust me we all have been there. I even tried on the DD36 more than 10 times years ago trying to convince myself it was the classic size or its the one for me. But.......no it doesn't work. Now I own 2 x DD40s. LOL - thinking back I'm so glad I just coughed up the money. Yes its a big chunk of change but saving $10-$15k on one you dont want wont make u happy anyway. |

I have a 36 mm date just which I have had for 30 years. I bought it after graduating from university. I have a smaller wrist (6.5”) and it fits very well. I don’t care about watch trends ie bigger or smaller cases. I wear what I like on my wrist. I still love My 16200 and wear it when I go to Court.
Now I am in my 50’s. I am considering a day date. Even though I have worn a 36 mm all these years, I will likely be opting for the 40 mm. The main reason? Nearsightedness! I find the 40 mm more legible. If you are over 45 and intend to keep the watch, I recommend that you consider going larger for the long run. |

40 is on a whole nother level. Price and weight.
That said smartest buy imo is the 36 in platinum.
