Thoughts on buying a 1861 Speedmaster?

Hey all,

Looking at buying a 1861 heslalite Speedmaster on Tuesday...

Or is it worth waiting for the 3861 Speedmaster?

I'm torn on this issue...

Thanks.

No telling when the new 3861 will come out and at how much of a premium in price. Getting an 1861 Hesalite is a sure thing and you can have it in a day or three. I have an 1863 sapphire sandwich stuck with FedEx somewhere in California. I opted for the sure thing, but FedEx is raining on my parade at the moment.

Exactly, plus if the 3861 doesn't have a heslalite option I would be kicking myself for missing the 1861

That's a tough call. I own the most recent iteration of the Speedy Hesalite and at this point, if I wasn't in a rush, I'd be inclined to wait. Increased power reserve, more magnetic resistance, better chronometric performance, and hacking seconds are pretty nice upgrades. There are sooooooooooo many Speedy's out there that I highly doubt they will increase in cost once the 3861 equipped model is released at whatever increased price point the market will support.

If you feel the love now why wait?
On the other hand if you want to have the latest reiteration of the speedy then wait for 3861 and pay the extra

Really?

I've been watching the market for the standard hesalite 1861 speedmaster for more than a year now and its grey market price has grown a lot in a short period. Probably more than 15% in one year.

Also, who or what is "they"?

Wait for the 3861. If you don't like the price of the 3861 you can always find an 1861. There are a ton of 1861 available both new & old. It's got to be the most flipped watch in the history of watchmaking.

You can still find a BRAND NEW 1861 for $4200 pretty easily and that's been the going price for at least a year.

True but on the other hand looking here in Europe on C24 there are aprox.800 Speedmaster available for buying now and more than 1.800 Subs available for buying now, thats on the flip side :)

Prices are going up on used Speedmasters or new with box/papers.

I took mine 5 months ago from AD and now is worth more than I paid for it.

I expect 3861 to go with much less discounts if any compared with 1861/1863.

1861 is solid mvt, it is depending how bad you want the goddies coming with 3861 and pay extra for it.

Good point about the Submariners but you have to understand that the Submariner is at least 100X more in demand than a Speedmaster. It's not a knock on the Speedmaster. But in the end the demand for everything Rolex is just insane.

And although I agree with you that Speedy's have gone up in value, it really isn't that much. 10% maybe? You can still get a brand new one with that huge box and all the goodies from dealers on Chrono 24 for $4200. That's 20% of the MSRP of $5250. People buy them, wear them for a year or 2 and then sell them. It's been going on for many years now.

Get the 1861, don't wait on something that may not come.

Definitely, my thoughts exactly. Mine is also worth more than what I paid for it a while back. I fully expect the 1861 standard hesalite speedy to jump in price when the movement is retired.

Get your watch now and enjoy it. Down the road if you want something different then buy/sell or trade. It is one of the things that make this hobby fun.

Personally I’d wait because I prefer hacking movements and my 1863 isnt very accurate. Also seeing how they eliminated the milky ring on the 321 maybe the new one will as well.
