MK3 Bezel Insert for 1680 Red Sub
Good afternoon!
This is officially my first ever post on the Vintage forum! I have my first vintage piece inbound, which is a Mark IV 1680 Red Sub from 1971 complete with original box, papers, & service history papers. Everything is original to the watch except for the early service insert, hands, and service crystal. I was told the original owner had the hands changed out because he couldn’t see them very well. Nevertheless he still has the original hands so I’m having them swapped back. I’m interested in switching out the bezel insert with a period correct fat font MK3 insert. I’m deciding between two inserts: The one on the left has some small surface scratches and shows signs of wear and is slightly faded with a matte finish. The one on the right is NOS so it’s mint and has a gloss finish. I know it’s personal preference, but which do you think would look better on my particular watch?

If the price is about the same, go for the NOS.
Congrats on the purchase.. |

Beautiful piece! I happen to have just gone through acquiring a mk3 insert for a Mk4 red sub. I’d go for the clean one too. Congrats!

That watch deserves a nice insert, I'd go with the NOS as mentioned by others.

Which is the period correct insert for a 1972 MK5 red sub?

Congrats on your find; for a watch in this serviced condition I'd choose the NOS inserts as well - however: to call any fat font version "MK3" is outdated and leads to misconfigurations (like it would just happen here); the two inserts on your pic seem to be MK6 which is not contemporary for your watch at all - you need a MK4 or MK5.0 (all Marks of the updated typology).

I would expect a long 5 MK2 for this vintage. If that isn't available then I would prefer a much fatter font MK3 than those pictured here.

Both inserts are not contemporary for your watch.
