Do you remember Terence Trent D'Arby?

He was pretty big deal back at the end of the eighties, and throughout the nineties as well, with hits like Sign Your Name, Wishing Well, Dance Little Sister, Delicate...

Remember?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dluHzQhLcME

He was often compared to likes of Prince, Sam Cooke, Little Richard and Michael Jackson and it was expected for him to assume the throne of the greatest soul/funk/rock singer of all-time.

Then he kinda disappeared, at least from the eyes of the public..

Well, he is alive and well, living in Italy with his family and enjoying himself to the maximum, while still creating wonderful music! He changed his name to Sananda Maitreya and I managed to do an interview with him for my web portal!

So...enjoy the reading!

His music was really popular during my middle and HS years. You always wonder where some of these people go. Good to know he is well and a really cool opportunity for you.

"I'll Never Turn My Back On You".....one of my top 5 favorite songs of all time. Also, his version of Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come" is terrific.

Was at one point talked about as taking over front man gig for INXS if I remember after Michael decided to choke himself to death.

Definitely remember him, but don't recall him being thought of that way.
Looking forward to the interview, though. Thanks for posting.

Nice interview. Writing it out with half the text in capitals is not nice though.

I remember him and often wonder what happened to him when his name comes up. I thought he had potential, but thought he had yet to prove it.

yes i remember him

the 80s had talent on tap, from every angle and for every genre, you thought it would last forever, but it ended,

but we have these songs forever.

According to Wikipedia he changed his name to Sananda Maitreya and considers his past life as Terrence Trent dead. He is releasing free music through his website. Looking at the 10M+ views for the video you posted he is probably doing well from Youtube revenue. Excellent artist!

He was big when I was in school, we had a short, angry Indian teacher called TT Morthy, and we speculated what the TT stood for and Terence Trent was number one, followed by Test Tube and Table Tennis.

+1.
but I agree the guy has a great voice. He's in a track in the first Buzzin Fly album (Buzzin' Fly Vol 1 - 2004), the independent deep house and techno record label launched in 2003 by Ben Watt (Everything but the Girl). The first albums - Vols I to IV - are very interesting with a nice atmosphere and girls love to have a few drinks with this sound even today fifteen years later. Trust me lol. I think Bas will like this one if he never heard it before but I don't know.

So much talent, but for whatever reason -- insufficient material, misguided management, whatever -- it never quite came together for TTD. That first album's a gem, though.

Was a big deal my mum loved his Sign Your Name album. If I recall correctly had a few decent songs on it.

Maybe, but Cat Stevens actually made his mark and was a proven talent before he disappeared.

He was one of my favorite artists back in the day and uber talented imho. Though his debut album was clearly the best of the lot I enjoyed the others as well. His music is well represented on my 80's and 90's playlists. I'll definitely check out the interview thanks for posting.

I closed the factory at 11:30AM and we all went home.

It touched 44 down my way and was still 41.5 at 7:15PM.

Highest temp was 49 about 30 kms north of us, not good.

But it was a cooler 26.5 inside and a cooler 30 day tomorrow.

Great piece, thank you. I remember seeing him at Frankfurt Alte Oper in the 80ties, he just dropped the mic and belted it out, a true vocal genius, and I’ve seen a bunch of great performers. I thought of him as a more romantic Prince bringing black American music to the next level. Hppy to to see he’s alive and well and not burned out and on some prescribed “meds”. Long live the blues. I wish I could photograph him one day...
