And it gets worse

On a layover stopped by an AD. They actually had a couple pieces in stock. Went to purchase a date sub, all was well until they found out I was from out of town and then they couldn’t sell it to me. I understand they would rather sell to locals and the repeat business, but a sale is a sale... Never seem this before.

Well, everyone wants subs/gmts in steel I for one is happy that watches go to locals, unless there is no AD where you live.

What about people vacationing that want to treat themselves to something nice while they’re away? ADs can call the shots but that’s just dumb in my opinion.

I wonder if the same AD runs their Daytona list in the same way, where people can’t queue jump!

Sounds like they should have qualified you better before offering you the product. If it was sitting in the case and they still refused to sell it. I would have been pissed.

That’s odd practice. A sale is a sale and there should be no discrimination IMO.

Fortunately I wasn’t subject to the sales exclusion when I bought my Sub C no date from an AD that I dropped by for a holiday.

What integrity? They had a watch, the customer wanted to buy it, and they discriminated against him because he didn't belong to a preferred customer base. I don't find it refreshing, but rather a depressing reminder of just how screwed up the Rolex market is right now.

Actually you’re right.

I had already edited my post before you quoted me. Momentarily I was thinking along some other lines which actually don’t make sense.

I agree completely. This is no way to treat paying customers. I hope one day this bites Rolex in the a$$.

I have been told the same in an AD while travelling abroad. They want to limit the number of people that buy tax free and when back home sell the watch at list plus. Just an example I can buy tax free a GMT LN for 6.3K€ and easily resell it at list when back home...

Sounds like OP was in the US, meaning he'd have to pay the tax charged in that state, provided the AD didn't make some kind of deal to "include" the tax in the sale. (But the AD would still have to pay tax on the sale to the government.) This doesn't sound like a tax issue.

I would have come close to losing it. I don't like new Rolex (after 5 digits I do not like them at all) but if that happened to me, I would be done with Rolex, that is insane.

Situation created by consumers
No winners here
For every genuine buyer there is a scalper out there, hard to judge who is real.

I’m not surprised. I walked into Geary’s Rolex Boutique in February of 2017 and they had pretty much everything except SS Daytona in the case, and would have loved to sell me something. February of 2018 they had nothing on display and said only local customers got any of the good stuff.
I’m willing to bet that 75% or more of their walk in business is tourists.

Sorry to hear this happened. This is extremely poor form on their part since you were physically there in the store and ready to purchase it. This is different from telling someone "we don't have that" on the phone who is clearly not local and calling around for inventory.

Huh? A sale is a sale... how does that AD know that the buyer will be one and done? Could be a customer for life. Bad business practice in my opinion.
