The early samples suffered from a problem with the 2355 movement. The change-over was delayed, until around 0130am. I believe the extra 70-hour power reserve accidentally led to a lack of ‘torque’ in moving the day/date display. Rolex added an extra part to overcome the issue.
Took a while , but all fine now.

Ahh I see. Thank you. Was curious as to whether or not mine would be problematic.

Still not sure why people continue to call the Day-Date The President. The President is the name of the bracelet. Day-Date is the watch. Some have Oyster bracelets. Some have straps. It would be like calling the Yacht master or Daytona that come on the OysterFlex, The Oysterflex. As well as some with the President bracelet are Datjust.

You mean 3255? No such thing as a 2355.

Because Rolex took out an advertisement in the mid 60's and referred to the Day-Date as the Presidents watch. President Lyndon Johnson had been wearing a DayDate and Rolex probably wanted to capitalize on the connection. DayDates have been called Presidents as long as I can remember and doubt you're going to change that anytime soon.

While true the President refers to the bracelet, the watch has had the nick name President for nearly 60 years.

Which, incidentally, makes things a real PITA for those of us who are DD fans — You can’t search for “President,” or “Day + Date,” or “Daydate,” or “Day-Date,” or Day, or Date, and be confident you’ll find what you seek.

With >50 DD reference #s just among 4- and 5- digit DDs, that doesn’t work either. (OTOH, seems the search world must be pretty much a hammock for GMT collectors!)

Very nice! I enjoy wearing this combo - unobtrusive, goes with everything, always looks crisp and classic. Highly recommended.

The real President Rolex. 36 Day Date gold with fluted bezel and presidential bracelet. So happy with this purchase. Is there a way to know what year is this watch? Will changing the dial and both day and date dials affect its value? Appreciate any opinions from you guys.

Great thread!

Here's my 228235.

And for those that are interested but don't like to meddle, here's a few of the DD deconstructed... and weighed.

Any concern with strength?

Sorry, been for a short vacation in Ba Na Hills.

They have to also be gold otherwise the abrasion in the end link channel would be too high.
No issue at all with strength. 18k gold is still a metal and pretty tough.

Other watches comes and goes in my collection.. my day date however, they all stay. I have deep respect for DD and i find them to be exceptionally comfortable on the wrist too. A perfect daily beater. A absolute timeless design.

Couldn't agree more. Wearing my other DD40 today. I'm not wearing much these days except pretty much swapping between my RG and YG DD40s. These are the 2 watches that will NEVER leave my collection.

Do you find the yellow and rose too similar in appearance? Im thinking of adding one onto my collection, could use your opinion.

Nah big difference. I actually used to have 2 Rose Gold DD40s and sold one of them for the YG piece.

I've always said this - learn from my mistakes your very first DD40 should be a YG piece. I still feel very strongly about this. RG may not last the test of time. Its more of a current trend watch.

YG on the other hand will be in fashion and the ultimate watch for decades to come. Out of the 2 though in real life I prefer the color of YG.

Dont get me wrong the RG is also very very nice but in some lighting RG doesnt look good especially in darker lighting.
