5990r vs 5980r heavy hitter
Looking to add one of these to gold Nautilus to my collection.
I am in the fortunate position of being able to buy at list at my AD for either of these. Prior to 2021 Patek releases my heart was set on the 5980r as my heavy hitter as I have always lusted after the 5980 SS but was not able to buy new and the prices of used discontinued ones are such that I may as well spend a little extra and buy PM all gold instead of steel. But since seeing pictures of 5990r I find my mind going towards the blue dial and this being the "Don" Nautilus reference. What are your views on the two big bad boys of Nautilus versus each other? Price wise I expect both to hold their value very well regardless as one will probably be discontinued in the next few years and one has just been launched and will probably be the watch to have for the instagram glitterati. |

I own the 5980 1r and today saw the 5990 1r.
I prefer the dial layout of 5980 and dial color of 5990. Both spectacular but 5980 would still have my preference. 5980 is more of an icon in my view and a future classic. Not sure the 5990 will be. |

5990R is absolutely fabulous and I would go with that. It was always a beautiful watch, and now in rose gold takes the crown as king of all current Nautilus' imho. Plus it has very useful complications, so winner in my book.

The 5990R is really beautiful, and it has an extra complication.
and to be able to get it at the year it was launched is just acing on the cake

5980. The 5990 is a bit clunky/chunky on my wrist.

I’d try on a 5990 at a grey to get a feel of the size. I have a 7.5 inch wrist and it was very too heavy/clunky for me. I prefer the nautilus with a slim profile...

I did a poll previously and more people like the 5990/1R. I prefer the combination of rose gold and blue dial too.

Yep, I have a 5990 SS and love it but the R is a grail for sure. If you can get it at list that would be the one to have in my opinion. Complications are more useful than 5960’, I think.

First let me correct you. It's not a 5990R or a 5980R... It's a 5990/1R and a 5980/1R. The 1R is for a full rose gold bracelet and the R by itself is for a rose gold watch on leather strap.
IMHO it's way harder to match a blue and gold watch with most clothing choices. For example it would look tacky af to wear a black or charcoal suit with a blue dial watch. Sure it can be done, but so can walking everywhere barefoot. That doesn't make it a great idea. It's definitely not as versatile as the 5980 1R. Plus I think the dial of the 5990/1R is quite busy and they shoved the iconic Patek logo into the little dial on the bottom. It just looks so out of place. If I had to choose between the two, then its the 5980/1R hands down.... Now that I already have a 5980/1R, I wouldn't mind also having a 5990/1R just for those times I'd like to wear a blue suit or something blue. But most occasions that I'd like to wear a FU watch, 5980/1R is still the King. It's just more tasteful and elegant through and through.

That said, I’d never wear either of these two /1r models with any kind of suit!!!!!! Ever. That would be tantamount to wearing a Cuban Gold chain with a suit. |

The 5990 is a thicker case, it wears noticeably larger than a 5980.

I had the 5990 and it was the same size as the 5980 IMO. But then again I am talking about SS.

So where is the 5990 you bought? That piece sells for 300k now on the grey market and you got offered it with no purchase history. Very doubtful to put it nicely. In December you posted you asked to buy your first entry level Patek - and just 4 months later you get a 5990/1R? Wrist shot? BS?

5980 of all kinds have skewed chrono pushers compared to 5990. Cannot unsee.

5990 in stainless steel over any of your 2 options.
But if you need gold then 5980R
