5513 with possible baked hands

Checking out this 5513, took two photos so the light could hit the hands differently. My buddy thinks the hands are original and have just been manipulated by watchmakers too many times over the years (1968 serial) but I think they look a little baked. Anyone with 5513 experience care to chime in?

Do you mean actually baked, or is that some kind of slang that I am missing? They simply look a different color, which could be natural, or non-natural. Hands aren't guaranteed to age the same way as a dial. They could've been produced in completely different factories and put together by Rolex.

Why would someone want to bake hands?

Nobody can say for sure from a photo, but it's perfectly normal for hand lume and dial lume to discolor differently.

Bake, like in an oven, to make parts appear darker.

I've heard of oven baking many items to add patina. Sometimes used in restorations to add age on certain replacement parts or reproduction paperwork which is a trick in the classic car world, window stickers etc.. I'd be guessing however hands can and do age differently than dials so I would doubt it thinking why would someone intentionally make them un-match the dial markers.

As noted above, lume often ages differently on hands and dials. I don't know any way to tell if someone has baked them in the oven, but you can check the way the lume glows in the dark (it might be slightly visible) and/or responds to visible and UV excitation. Hand and dial response should be fairly similar.

the hands look fine. The dial and insert are later than 1968 though.

Totally wrong dial for 1968. Should be a decade later for this dial (Maxi mk1).
For this dial the serial should be 5-6m and 1977/78.
Seeing so many of these mismatched dials/cases.....

Pretty sure the guy who just bought a sub that was supposed to be a maxi mk1 had the proper dial for this sub, maybe they could swap lol

I'd care more about the 1980's insert

So why would someone bake hands in an oven to make them darker than the rest of the watch?
What would the point be?

Yes, that's what I was implying, to make them darker. If the hands had to be replaced with new ones and someone wanted to have them appear older than they are, what method would be utilized? I'm not sure, so I went with baking.

They would color match the lume.
