Fake Patina?

I keep seeing a lot of vintage subs showing creamy patina dials and wonder why so many? Then I typed in fake patina on youtube and saw a few postings showing how to use coffee stains to add "age" to the looks. So I'm guessing it adds value to the watch...who knew?

Now, I would view them with a jaundiced eye?

In my experience cream patina on vintage Rolex watches is a naturally occurring process & happens without any interference or aid on tritium dialed watches.
There are exceptions & those that seek to alter or enhance patina.
But I do believe the vast majority of watches have natural patina.

Even and undamaged is what brings a premium. Only an idiot would risk a good dial to get deeper patina.

Those are replica watches and parts. I’m pretty sure the dials they are rubbing coffee on aren’t 30-50 year old fragile tritium markers.

No one in their right mind would rub coffee on a real $1000-5000 dial, or $500-1000 set of hands. I don’t think the financial reward is there, it would be a crazy gamble.

The shady stuff I see from reading posts is remove age spots, dark spots, and color match hands to the dial then not tell you or repairing dials and not disclosing it.

Tritium turns that color with age. I have military night sights from the 70’s and 80’s that are a beautiful even cream color.

We do not discuss fake anything on Rolex watch forums.
