Can’t believe you did zero research on the most discussed topic in Rolex today.

The watch you sent to Rolex as you described it was worth much more than what you got back. Having said that you got what you wanted and paid for imho

We have all seen watches that have undergone this sort of transformation. It's unfortunate in terms of lost value (and history), but I don't think it's fair to say that anyone was cheated. It's well known that this is standard RSC policy, and they consider that they are restoring the watch back to factory specs using authentic parts.

Didn't you agree to this? You had to in order for them to proceed. They're not going to let out of their service center a watch that would fail in various integrity tests.

Seems as if OP did not know the original value and now feels "cheated."

I think most owners don’t know how a case replacement, or a dial replacement, or other RSC work can shave thousands off the market value of their watch. I can’t abide the word “cheated”, though. It bears a meaning that someone intentionally deceived the OP. This is a terrible outcome for the OP - so I understand “disappointed”. Surely all of us would have done anything possible to keep the watch original. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

This brings to mind the (in)famous Loren Janes/Steve McQueen Submariner story.

Should Rolex advise customers that the service they are recommending could impact the collectors value?

Some people just want their watches to look good. The scratches and worn patina for extra value isnt what everyone wants. Rolex isnt in the resale business. They sell and service them.

As has already been said, Rolex manufacture and repair to a standard they can guarantee the product's functionality. It is not in my view Rolex's responsibility to inform you of every potential financial outcome. That being said, I have seen a few letters before asking customers to confirm that they are really really sure they want to go ahead with replacement parts - but that is very much the exception and not the rule. If a vintage watch is worth more to an individual because of the dial/case/bezel etc it is for that individual to decline to replace them. |

I would be under the impression that Rolex would not service or repair a watch with parts (case) that could lead to complications later down the toad. Remember that they are liable for any issues once they touch the watch. So if I was rolex, I would swap the case out too.
Either that or not touch the watch in the first place as you could not guarantee the quality of the work performed. So my 2c is that Rolex did the right thing. You were notified of the repairs to be performed and the required items needed. The choice at that point would have been to go ahead or stop and send back the watch. You chose to have it worked on. I don’t see a fault on Rolex. |

Just when you think you are getting a handle on the terminology, here we are mixing in herpetology! But seriously, RSC was pretty transparent when I sent in a wrecked 1018 for the rejuvenation treatment. Very clear about the fact they were replacing half the watch, which was fine with me.
If OP's watch was in decent vintage condition pre-service, and he agreed to full replacement, that's a pity. But it's not on RSC IMO. |

Does Rolex routinely return the used parts to the customer? Would they return them if requested? Is it their unwavering policy to retain the parts?

No, because that would allow the opportunity for the loose parts to be sold, and possibly used to 'create' another model that isn't wholly original.

To answer your question about returning parts, the T&Cs also state new parts are supplied on an exchange basis only and old parts are destroyed after a certain period after the repair is complete. Exceptions have/can be made but their standard practice is exchange and destroy old parts. |

New case, dial hands and serviced movement = new watch. Enjoy!
Too late to ask afterwards.

Unless we see before and after photos, there's no way to know for sure how the value was affected, if at all.
Sure, an original-parts Sub is more desirable and valuable, but not if it's completely trashed and water damaged. Can we at least see "after" photos? |

I agree. But, it seems the OP hasn't even logged-on since posting this, some 4 days ago.
