The 5167A doesn’t age well. Change my mind.

Hypothesis based on (very) few observations: the 5167A doesn’t look good when used.

The brushed bezel, which is probably the most attractive part of the integrated case, turns unsightly when scratched and/or dented. Also, the otherwise matte Tropical strap gets this cheap plasticky shine over time, which you don’t see on the Oysterflex or the silicone RM straps.

I briefly owned a brand new Aquanaut in the summer of 2016 but sold it fairly quickly after I saw Alan Maleh’s on Hodinkee (see link). It seems as though this watch doesn’t age with the same charm as, say, a Submariner or even a classic Calatrava, such as the ref. 96 for example.

If I look at that watch in the link I would say that the watch took a hell of a beating. Now if you have crazy money you can use a Aquanaut as a beater and wear it during the reconstruction of your beach house or so, but I would expect the watch to age a lot better when you use it 'normally'

I think it's when the edges of the bezel are polished and lose their sharpness is when they can kind start looking bad, but i wouldn't say dated

No watch is going to look very good if you run it through your garbage disposal, as Maleh apparently did. And certainly not a classic Calatrava.
And I don't understand why you would need anyone to change your mind about the 5167a if you already owned one and sold it within a short period of time. If you don't like it, you don't like it. No harm done.

Mine is like a year old and hardly a scratch on it and I wear it every single day and not too carefully. However, if it does get scratched up, like my sub, I will still wear it.

You could use your same argument against a nautilus or an AP RO. In fact, under your argument, most watches should not be worn as they may get unsightly scratches.

My 8 year old beat up 5167a looks better to me now than it did when it was new.

The vintage fan in me says this looks great. New watches are great and all but nothing like personalizing your own watch.. or if you buy a watch that tells a story/lived a hard life.

I personally love seeing a 5167a and 5711 actually being worn daily or regularly versus sitting in a safe collecting dust. I wear my 5167a and 5711 regularly to get my moneys worth out of both and if they get scratched that's life.

I think it looks fine great, it’s my grail watch actually. However… I just asked my wife, “what do you think about this watch?“ (she has no idea of the thread subject) she said, “it looks old and overused” I asked why and she said, “all the scratches“ :)

Maleh's 5167 doesn't look pretty in my eyes, just banged up. Probably because I don't love the 5167 enough to begin with when new. A banged up 3700 or 5711 on the other hand is still beautiful in my eyes...

The beauty of the aquanaut is in the brushed bezel and polished finishing around it.
They are far prettier when unmarked.
I always wear them to work under long sleeves and wouldn't consider them a watch that looks better with patina!

aquanauts and nautilus are scratch magnets. whether you think this is aging well depends on your taste.

It is a nice watch but I don't seem to like it enough to ever have pulled the trigger. My skinny wrists make it look a little big as well, definitely wears larger than my 5711. Also not sure I need a third watch with 315 or 324 movement.

I’ve never seen the rubber strap turn shiny. Is that normal with age? I guess it could be changed for a reasonable price, unlike the colored variations.

I personally think the aquanauts look ok with the scratches (though not as good as the Rolex sports models). But I don’t think I’ve seen a Nautilus that looks good with the wear and tear. I think it’s the rubber strap and the overall sportier look that makes the aquanauts age better than nautilus.

i hate the aquanaut buckle. if the strap is cut too loose the watch looks bad, if it is too tight it just hurts. PP should take a lesson from rolex on how to do clasps.

I think it looks great. What’s the point of owning it if you are not going to wear it? I guess if keeping it wrapped up and never seeing the light of day and just knowing you own it brings you joy so be it. If it were me I’d wear the living heck out of it and enjoy it.
