Looking to buy a 1979-80 Rolex Sub 1680. Need help.

Hi everyone,
I am interested in purchasing a vintage rolex. There is one in particular I am looking at, a Sub 1680 5.9 serial. Everything is original including the ss band. Would i be paying too much at $8k for this watch?

Thanks

All about condition. Any pictures of the watch?

$8,000 is not unreasonable. All pricing is based on originality and condition. Since there are no photos, I'm sure you have it well under control.

Fair price, if in good condition

Yes, possibly way too much, or it's possibly an amazing bargain. Without photos, we can't tell you much.

Keep in mind that originality is great, but condition is king. I've seen plenty of "original" watches that are trashed.

Agreed: pic 8 makes the dial look like a black lunar landscape.

reasonable, but...

8000 is reasonable for a nice condition 1680, but not the one on ebay.

Run quickly in the opposite direction from that 1680! Very bad relume on the dial.

In general, I'd never buy an expensive vintage Rolex on eBay, unless you really know the reference and have done tons of homework. And even then, I probably wouldn't, especially from a seller called "wholesale" whatever with a woefully inadequate description.

Good lesson here for why prospective buyers should ALWAYS post detailed pics before buying and get some advice from all the very knowledgeable folks here.

HQ Milton has a nice '79 1680 right now. A bit more expensive that what you're looking at, but a very nice dial and - as discussed elsewhere on this forum - 1680 prices are heading north quickly.

"Buy the seller" is a phrase often used on this forum and this is a perfect example of why. There is a sales forum here in addition to the HQ link above. I'm sure you've received some PMs... No matter what, do what you did here, post pics, solicit opinions. Good job.

Thank you everyone for your opinions. I also PM'd some folks on here who quickly gave me some good advice and rendered their expert views on some vintage watches. I appreciate your concerns and will post once I get myself a solid Vintage Sub.

Regards,
Gerald

Jacek is a dealer; all else being equal you will pay a premium buying from him over a private seller, because he must make his commission. THAT SAID I have purchased several watches from him and have been entirely 100% satisfied in each case; I have never heard a word against him online, and I personally would not hesitate to buy from him again as you'll hear from others.

Whatever he's selling will be what he says it is, and unless it's a truly unusual piece you can be confident you aren't paying considerably above market value. This particular watch you've pointed out? If I was in the market I'd buy it with confidence. Best of luck to you

A trusted seller. As always, you will know what you are buying.

Service dial. He states the hands have aged differently, point is they dont match, but they are correct. Up to you but for me the price is a little rich for a service dial and missmatched hands with the wrong endlinks...

This one seems more correct for a little more...

The ebay listed Submariner has something funny going on with the dial, as everyone else has mentioned. But beyond that it just looks weird. The pearl looks recessed or sunken, and very odd. The insert looks a little thin. The hour and minute hands in at least two pictures appears markedly different as far as patina.

I would suggest looking at watches from various dealers first to get a feel for what a 1680 should look like before diving in. Otherwise you may regret a fast final purchase that skipped the research. I've been there before.

I have a great 1979 1680.
The watch has seen very little wear and was serviced by Rolex Toronto recently.
Send me an email and I can send pics.

Anything updates to this?

I notice a few other 1680s on ebay between 6900 and 8k. Most have service parts in this price range.

I actually purchased the 1680 referenced in the thread above:

https://www.rolexforums.com/showthre...t=1680+vintage

It’s a beautiful piece and my plan was to hold on to it long-term, but I’m already itching to get out of it what I put in and upgrade. So the point made above about doing all your research ahead of time is spot on. The more I learn about individual references (mostly from TRF members) the more I understand my preferences.
