A Fretful Acquisition (But Well Worth It): My New Gilt 1016

As I am want to do, I was looking at upcoming estate sales and happened to see a fuzzy picture of what seemed to be a great looking watch.

IMG_5441.JPG

Not being a local to the sale (it was in Connecticut and I in Chicago), I called up the estate agent and asked for information on the watch and was told that I was the 30th person who called that day about it. He didn't have much in the way of information and wasn't too keen on talking so I asked if he could send pictures via text or email. The sale was 10 days away so I figured there was some time. I called back a few days later after there no pictures came through and was told that he was busy but would call back.

After no call back I pestered and repeated my attempts, asking if the watch had sold. He told me that the estate had previously decided that items would only be sold on the day of the sale, for cash, at the estate itself. I tried to get a price for the watch and after getting it began to figure out how to get to the sale. I was working every day leading up to it and the Saturday of the sale I was supposed to be in St Louis for a wedding. I attempted to convince my wife that I could fly to the sale the night before and then directly to St Louis, where she could drive and meet me. She, as the voice of reason, said no.

The watch-family stepped up at this point and a friend of a friend was willing for me to pay him a bit to wait in line and buy it. I wired him the money and, a few hours later, was told by the estate agent that because of the intense interest from myself and two others, we would be able to give our one best offer the following day and the highest bid would win the watch. Being a gentleman, the friend's friend wired me back the money and I set a bid in mind.

The next day I bid and, as you can tell by the title of this story, won the watch. After some further fretting during shipping, I got home last night and this beauty was there waiting for me. The expandable bracelet (20 mm with 58 end links without any number on the links and 1/64 on the clasp - anyone know the bracelet 'model?') was removed immediately after purchase, according to the family, and is completely NOS and stiff as a board. The watch came with the purchase box with was from Chronometre Philippe Beguin in Geneva, the same retailer that sold the Bao Dai 6062, which was an interesting plus too. As you can see, it appears to have slightly later hands but with the matching patina I think they're part of the story and would never change them.

Until the next adventure begins, I'll enjoy this one and hope you have too:

Great story! Thanks for sharing and well done! Is it safe to say you got a good price on that beauty? (I hope so!)

A well deserved reward to a significant amount of perseverance. I always worry about the size of these beauties, but by the photo it looks perfect on your wrist. Enjoy this vintage piece as much as possible.

Auction Zip is a good place to find estate auctions across the country.

On my gilt 1016, I discovered that the spring bars installed (likely later) were not the proper ones and the pins stuck out the sides too much (as your bottom one seems to). I sucked it up and paid a bit for the right ones (at the local RSC). You should too!

Your tale indeed was harrowing...This one is a keeper.

Thanks Adam! I am indeed going to head up there soon and order a pair. How much did they cost?
