3130 movement gaining speed?

Hello,

Recently I've picked up a used 114270 Explorer from 2008 in great (cosmetic) condition. Case and bracelet pristine without signs of having been re-polished, so I'm not concernned that there is anything worn-out or damaged. However, right after purchase in mid-February it gained about 2.5 s/day (measured over 5 days), but now it's gaining almost 10s/d.

My question: Could this be caused by the watch having been stored for a long time unused?

Of course I'll take it back to my dealer or to the jeweller's it had been originally purchased from, I'm just looking for an opinion.

It being 12 years old means that your escapement is probably running bone dry by now, causing lower than optimal amplitude, extra wear and bad timekeeping.

I'd suggest getting it serviced.

I agree with Bas. The usual disclaimer from a seller is “service history unknown”.

But if your seller gave you a guarantee then you could maybe get them to split the cost of an overhaul.

But I wouldn’t have just anyone do the overhaul. Perhaps agree with seller that you will send to RSC and split the standard costs.
