ND Ceramic Sub for New Explorer?
Hey Everyone,
One of first posts...I have seen a bunch of other threads of people debating which watch to go with. I Wanted to get everyone's opinions on trading my 1.5yr old ND Ceramic Sub that I bought new from AD for a New Lume Explorer 39mm? I love my Sub, however at times feel it's a bit much...not to mention I see them all the time. Am I crazy to trade the Sub for Explorer? Something kind of cool and understated about the Explorer. As much as I love the Sub, it is definitely not subtle lol Thoughts? Thanks!! |

I used to own the ND Sub and now own the new Explorer. Both are great. The Explorer is definitely a more subtle watch.
I would not trade, though. Save up and buy the Explorer. Sub + Explorer = great combo! |

I wouldn't but if you don't feel comfortable in the sub then do it!

IMO, not crazy at all
I would not trade it, I would save up and get the Explorer. However, if you’re not going to wear it, cause you’re bored with it for instance, then IMHO you should trade it. There’s no point in keeping it, if you no longer like it/enjoy it. |

Same. Own both as well, but would not trade one for the other.

I appreciate the comments, was definitely looking for you guys to say pull the trigger...but apparently you all are smart and not impulsive...so, I will keep the Sub and save for the Explorer. (kind of knew answer but was hoping for bad advice from you all lol). Thanks for the input!! I guess next is the Explorer unless any of you all have additional suggestions in that price range? I like IWC, but not sure if it's worth it for watch like Inteneur or Mark etc...especially since they aren't in house...may as well go w/ Sinn for less? any thoughts on mixing it up...? looking for a little less of a diver and more versatile...Explorer is no brainer, but....Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Both are great watches but I would keep the Sub. Look at the Tudor Ranger, looks very similar to the Explorer and can be worn on steel, leather or bund strap. It is listed at 41 mm but wears smaller as the lugs and bezel are not as pronounced as the Submariner. The watch can be had for around 2K on steel and is a great value.

Seems like a reasonable trade, imho. Maybe getting the short end of the stick in terms of pricing however. I'd prefer the Exp to the SubC too. SubC cost about $1K more.

I would keep the Sub. After selling your Sub at a slight loss, you would be in Explorer 1 territory. Would essentially be a straight trade. Giving up a lot of features in a Sub, considering the cost at this point for you would be equal.

Keep the Sub and get the Explorer when you can. They are both great to own as they are similar but yet very different.

Up to you if the itch needs to be scratched but I would personal stick with the Submariner.
True the Sub is more popular but there are good reasons for that being so.

Oh no, please don't sell the quintessential Rolex/Sports watch.
Maybe save up for an explorer (which btw is a "common" watch as well...)

I definitely see your point and love an Exp I for its subtlety and easy readability. The only thing that has to make sense is the money part. Sub is such a classic that I would hold on to and save up for the new one. If you find that after a year or so that the Sub gets zero wrist time you can still sell it. You won’t loose any value, it might even increase...

Hello - One of my first posts as well. Tough question to ask, as it's fairly weighted toward personal preference, with a sprinkle of economics. Which to be true, is also personal.
My first was/is a Sub, but similar thinking as yours opened up my thinking to "what watch do *I* really want, notwithstanding what other people might like". And for me, it's the Oysterquartz at present. Explorer would be my second choice. I still have the Sub. Wear it occasionally. Evaluating if I'm a "collector" sort or not. We'll see. So, my opinion would be to do whatever makes it so when you look down at your wrist you smile and think to yourself, "yeah... I like that", and doesn't cost you money you can't afford. |
