I prefer manual for my weekend cars. The traffic in the D.C. Metro area killed my love for rowing through gears.

manual if I can get it. the problem is, most cars don't have it.
I have a 2008 boxster stick and a 2013 panamera 4 with pdk (no manual available). pdk is NOT the same as a manual....you can talk it up like it is, but it isn't. pano is, in every way, a better car. faster, more comfortable, every luxury you can have.. but its also antiseptic feeling every time I get in the older car I realize its still the best car ive ever owned. the stick just makes it come alive...even just around town. also have 2 Toyotas.. 1978 FJ40 and 2007 sequoia. once again, the new car with the auto is a far far better vehicle.... but there is nothing like rowing the gears with that big, 2ft long shifter on the 78.... even nyc traffic doesn't bother me. when I replace the sequoia, it will be with a Tacoma 4dr 6 speed manual. |

Does anyone buy sports cars with manual gearboxes anymore?
I was a super fan of a true manual and they are a blast to drive but the new autos are so much faster. I drove a new 2016 Corvette Z06 with about 100 less rwhp than my C6 and it was faster in the 1/4 4-5 times I ran down the track. There is a reason that all the super/hyper cars got rid of traditional transmissions and F1 cars ditched them 25 years ago. .2-.4 seconds per shift is a big deal.

I had to give up manual trans when I lost my right leg. Now I (and my license) are restricted to auto and a left foot accelerator mod. It's a huge BFD to me as the car is a necessary evil to get me from point A to B in reasonable safety and comfort. That's it. It's not a mobile entertainment center or photo studio.

For me it's not about the fastest shifts, most horsepower. It's about driver engagement and the experience behind the wheel. Driven a few Pcars with PDK and there's no doubt that it's a great transmission and certainly faster than I can shift.
Still - manual trans for me all the way. Learned to drive on a 72 Beetle and been driving manual my entire life. So when I decided to treat myself to a midlife crisis there was no question which way to go. |

I would drive manual if offered. Seems the cars I like always come with a dual clutch automatic. Last manual I had was an Audi RS4 Cabrio, that was a fun car. Over the years, I have had 13 Corvettes and all were manual except 1 and only reason I bought that was it was too good of a deal to pass on.
Was car shopping pretty heavy over the last year. None of the cars I was interested in offered a manual trans.

My '13 Honda Accord has a six-speed.
I'll never own an automatic as long as manuals are still available in the marketplace. As for sport cars, I don't need one.

I would prefer manual over auto if I didn't spend so much time in traffic.
Traded my Corvette (C6) manual for a Lexus GS350 earlier this year. Used the paddle shifters once or twice in the 5 months that I've had it, but they are just a novelty. |

Andreas Preuninger, the head of the Porsche GT program, when introducing the last generation GT3 in a magazine, when criticized that the GT3 would only be PDK (flappy paddles) said "Grandmas can use paddles. They aren't challenging" often summarized as "Flappy paddles are for Grandmas" In the current generation GT3, Manuals have been reintroduced, as well as manual only in the 911R and GT4. They didn't do this "not to make money". They did this because of consumer demand. In other words, their customers demanded manuals be reintroduced and they listened to their customers. So yeah, if you are doing wheel to wheel racing at the highest levels, every microsecond counts. If you are driving legally on the street, its meaningless. However, the end is near. Its only a matter of time will not only Manuals be gone but driving will be gone. No need for you to touch the wheel. The driving nanny will do it for you. |

I love a good manual (a Cayman GT4 for example) but man, the PDK is an amazing trans...

Yes, a 4-speed. But after driving this around town in stop-and-go traffic, I doubt I would enjoy a 7-speed stick shift anywhere except the track or open road.

If available, I'd chose it over automatic any day.
it depends on the car though too. An A8 or S8 or 7 series can totally be automatic. Lean back and cruise.

A manual was a must for me until I bought my little VW GTI which has a double-clutch and I've been sold on the technology since. It's fast and entertaining. Don't think I'd ever buy a stick unless it was an older Porsche.

I understand the appeal of a stick but given traffic and such I'd rather get my kicks on recreational vehicles off-road.

no way i would ever own one with a manual again, long sits in traffic, automatics shift faster, plus in drag racing automatics win in equally modified vehicles... i've had two manual silverados, a manual 3000GT, manual Focus ST (daily driver) i'm looking into ordering a pitch-black hell cat and it will be the 8 speed auto no questions asked.

El-Duderino - thanks for the photo of your beautiful C2.
My favourite American 'muscle car'. These are in my list of the 10 best looking cars of all time. They look as good in Convertible form as they do in Coupe.

Thanks. I’m biased, but I’d have to agree about it being one of the best looking cars of all time. There really is something about that era of Corvettes that designers just got right. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

The C2 is just unique - nothing else quite like them. Yours is my favourite spec of wheels and bonnet bulge, and it looks absolutely pristine. Only Series 1 E Types, Ferrari Daytona, Maserati Khamsin and Lamborghini Miura embody the same styling flair.
