Thank you for your service Once I was in a flight of four off CVN-70 that had to divert to a base (I forget the name) around Vancouver. You guys were as welcoming and nice as can be. We had to spend the night so the hangar gave us a van to drive to another part of the base, or somewhere, to the BOQ. We (of course) were in our flight suits with American flags on them and we pulled up to a guardhouse and a gate. The guard came out, looked at us and said: “you guys are lost, this is Canada!” But you treated us like royalty.

Ha! Fantastic! I’ve smuggled my fair share of USAF pilots in and out of base abroad in a Peugeot 206!

Wow, that's quite the story! Any landing you can walk away from is a good one, as they say.

That original video is crazy. And the other close call - it’s all good if you walked away from it.

In the spirit of what didn’t turn out to be a crash...

That happened over 10 years ago but the documentary was just released earlier this year.

I thought I’d just skim it for a minute to what the headline meant. But then was sucked into the dramatic real-life situation.

Back in 1979 when I started at American Airlines, there were 8 of us in the new hire class. The 4 senior guys went on the B-707 as flight engineers and the rest of us got assigned the B-727. Within a couple years, AA retired the 707 so I never got to fly it. It was such a great looking airplane.

Thanks for sharing this. What an incredible ending to an otherwise terrible situation.

Thank you for sharing this Paul. I found a follow up to it, and man it really shows the heart and dedication ATC have. A tough job, and a bunch of great people!

The link Jason just posted is a worthwhile bookend.

All the ATC people involved won awards for their efforts. But watch to that one’s end to see the pilots preso - it’s priceless.

Yea, along with the absolute awesome job the ATC did, the stones the pilot had to save himself and family is unbelievable. I'd love to have a beer with that pilot!
