Kaiju Films. Big Fan. Godzilla!!!!!!
Godzilla (1954). Just finished watching this classic. It's my all time favorite from the kaiju genre. What a fantastic flick. So much fun to watch. Special effects that worked so well considering the time and available technology in post WWII Japan. The unnatural movements of Godzilla's rubber suit. The predictable story line, dialogue & acting. The underlying political messaging. It's all so good. I could go on and on but ultimately I just love the whole experience. I've seen most of the 32 films of this franchise made in Japan but my favorites are the first 15 made prior to the 80's. Especially the ones directed by Ishiro Honda. Anyone else or is it just me?
Mid century film making at it's very best ........

Big fan here. If you like the pre-1980s films (aka the Showa-era films), you should get this Criterion set of all 15 that came out last year.

huge Gojira fan... for obvious reasons. the first movie is extremely sad and tragic and that Ifukube soundtrack is amazing. while not all the movies at good , the core are just wondrous... and especially 'War of the Gargantuas' is a very personal favorite of mine. |
