Look at Ireland, Germany, and the beer gods in Belgium. There is a reason IPAs are essentially non-existent with the Masters of Beer in those countries. And even the ones you can find are no where near as horribly brutal as the Over the top I can out Hop You Hoppiness of the terrible american craft IPAs. True bastardization of beer.
It is interesting to see the fun names and cans of the craft breweries, but the beers just SUCK.

IPAs are definitely not for everybody.

That picture perfectly sums up the thoughts of real beer purists when confronted with IPAs.

I’d say the over the top hoppiness was more of a problem when the IPA craze started out +\-10 years ago. Nowadays I think most of the beer companies have figured out a nice balance. I wasn’t a fan of IPAs at all at first. Perhaps my palette just changed. Either way, the sales speak for themselves.

IPA’s do vary quite a bit.

I have found some I like over the years.

Alcohol by volume: 4.5% - 17.2%
Original gravity: 1.050 - 1.090
Bitterness (IBU): 25 - 120
Color (SRM): 6 - 14
Final gravity: 1.000 - 1.025

Sounds like John is describing a typical west coast IPA that was popular 10-15 years ago.

Todays IPAs are far worse offenders. They taste like OJ and many even contain milk sugar lol

The IPA is the tip of the iceberg. Fruited sours and imperial stouts with more adjuncts than a candy bar are all the rage.

My take is drink what you like. I do enjoy a good NEIPA but have been drinking mostly unfiltered lagers, pilsners and the occasional Belgian quad of late.

I will say the NEIPA is a vast improvement over the European variety of India pale ale. This was not a style meant to be the best but rather a style created for the beer to keep on the journey over to the English colonies from my understanding.

It's just all about health, happiness & family. The rest are just necessary inconvenience we have to deal with.
