We occasionally read threads about Rolex watches attracting unwanted - sometimes even criminal - attention

However, one of the enduring Rolex 'myths' is that the watch can be quickly liquidated in an emergency situation e.g. converted to ready cash, especially when travelling overseas

Has anyone here actually used their Rolex to extricate themselves from a difficult situation? I am just curious as I have fortunately not had to do this myself, and nor has anyone I know. I cannot recall any threads where this has happened …although someone is bound to know of (or find) one!

Interesting question and can't wait to read some stories.

Wondering if the now ubiquitous nature of the fake (and some damn good ones) have made it hard to convince someone that what you are using to barter your way out of a tight spot is the real McCoy.

..the purchase of a Medium Size Datejust to my wife saved me from a lot of trouble in regards to the following watch purchases for myself.

Well first would doubt if you or anyone regularly read threads about Rolex watches attracting unwanted sometimes even criminal attention.That type on thread on this and the many other forum are in a very very tiny proportion to the posts daily on this and other forums.

Changed to 'occasionally'. I was really referring to wearers who sometimes have to endure unwanted remarks or opinions from others - I see this mentioned regularly. However, the point is that I would like to hear some stories which substantiate the assertation to which I refer. The thread is intended to be light-hearted in tone, despite the opening sentence.

A number of people have posted in the past that at times when they had the misforune to require some cash they had to sell their Rolex watch.

Rolex watches are not that difficult to sell if need be.

I had to pawn my first GMT for about a week during a labor dispute with the company. I got 1800 for it. Just the watch, no box or anything. That was in 2004. Strike pay was only 200 a week, tuff to take care of the family on 200. That was the only time I did that during a 6 year 4 month strike.

Personally, no. As we all have heard at some point, I have also heard of folks being held up in visiting countries where they were in a bind and needed to get immediate funds where flipping their Rolex got them the cash they needed and in some cases saved their lives! I am unsure how true the latter example would ring true as if a criminal in a foreign country wanted your valuables let alone your Rolex there would be no real room for negotiating... In real life nobody tells you they are coming after you, it doesn't happen that way, there are no arguments or curses like in the movies... Stay alert and safe at all times!

Never heard of someone being arrested in a foreign land, and in some cultures paying bribes is the only way to get out. I'm sure they are plenty of those happening.

On a serious note there are plenty of U.S. news reporters and folks providing humanitarian work in foreign countries that unjustly get jailed all the time! You are 100% correct on the bribes aspect in some cultures!

plus a few hard blows to someones head and I could really mess up the movement!

It was a tense negotiation. I was fed up, felt as though I was being bullied, ready to walk out. I said these are my terms, you've got 5 minutes to huddle and let me know. I'm "this close" to calling "the other guy" back. They went to another room, where one of them said "I think he's for real, I mean, look at him.... after all, he is wearing a big ole rolex." They came back and accepted my terms.

Just kidding.

I don't know if this counts but while flying in a Cessna I lost my heading indicator. I used my GMT2 Pepsi I had at the time to make sure my magnetic compass was accurate by using that little trick of geometry. I was concerned because the HI and compass were slaved and I wanted to make sure that both hadn't failed. I flew on home using my magnetic compass. The GMT just confirmed I was vaguely headed in the right direction.

Mine hasn't gotten me out of trouble but 1 reason I bought it was the expectation that should I be forced to sell it, it would retain most of the price that I paid. I looked at it as an investment that I would get daily enjoyment out of.
