1680 single red question

Hi all,

From this link I read that

http://www.drsd.com/watch-info/red-sub/redsub.html

Red Submariner Dial Varieties and Case Numbers

The Red Submariner was produced with 7 different dial versions that have been recognized by the collector community. I have estimated the production range based on my experience with these watches as follows:

Mark I (Meters First) 2.07M to 2.2M

Mark II/III (Meters First) 2.2M to 2.45M

Mark IV (Open “6” Feet First) 2.45M to 3.?M

Mark V (Open “6” Feet First) 2.?M to 3.?M

Mark VI (Closed “6” Feet First) 3.?M to 4.0M

Mark VII (White Submariner) 4.0m to 7M+

Mark VIII (Luminova) Red Sub Service Dial

I found a 3.00XXXXX single red sub with a Mark 6 dial. is this ok or it should be the Mark 5 dial?

thanks

I would say either will be ok as there will be some overlap.

No hard or fast serial number cut offs. I have seen mark 4s in cases as low as 2.36. I have seen a few in 2.38s. The list you have referenced from was based on an article written few years ago. Many cases have popped up since then to call the article's guidelines into question. Use these guidelines like a drunk uses a lamppost....for support but not guidance. So, yes it is likely ok.

Although the red Sub tables are a guide, they are fairly accurate so I would use them more like a sober person about to drink his first beer!

If you notice the serial number range for the Mark VI - Mark VI (Closed “6” Feet First) 3.?M to 4.0M - the earliest ones are in the 3 million range with some uncertainty when they first started to appear. They way I interpret the data, Mark V or Mark VI would be correct.

My MK 4 is a 3.7, was told that due to the flaky red paint on the MK 5 dial Rolex may have reverted to a MK 4 dial briefly
