Fake money being paid for real watch

I saw this on local craigs and would like to share with TRF:

https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/jwl...619548389.html

Rolex scammers (Walnut Creek)

Me and my wife met up with a couple at Pete's coffee in Walnut Creek . They were interested in my watch I have for sale . Short end of the story they tried to pass $5000 of counterfeit $100 bills for the watch . The name the guy goes by is Jon . He is about 6'2" , Hispanic with tan skin , with a lot of tattoos. Black grayish hair in his late 40's early 50's , around 240lbs. The lady is about 5'5" dirty blond hair and same age . She's about 150lbs , Hispanic . She has tattoos of roses going across her chest . I know what your thinking they have tattoos and don't look like people that would own a Rolex . Well I have a lot tattoos and don't fit the persona either . So meet at a bank or police station and be on your toes . The phone number they were using is 209 256 2117

How fake were the bills and how did they react when you brought it to their attention that the bills were counterfeit? A good idea is to meet at a bank and have them withdraw the funds in front of your eyes.... even if you just suggest this it will drive off 99% of the basic scammers...

Had a similar situation in regards to a van I was selling, the buyer didn't want to do a Bank transfer as he only dealt in cash , so the other option is you come to the bank and hand the cash over, in the event its "funny Money" and the buyer hands it over the bank has to honor this transaction, I mention this to the buyer then he went cold and tried to beat me down on the price to which I said No..... he then made his excuses and departed. always push for a bank transfer,

I had a similar situation with a $30,000 car. The buyer wanted to pay in cash which I refused. I insisted on the two of us going to his bank, having the bank make up a bank draft to me in my presence, and only then signing over the car. He agreed and the transaction at the bank went well.

Thank goodness you were not swindled, I would agree meet at a bank after the funds are verified and fully deposited in your bank account that’s when I would hand over the watch

Crazy - goes to show that you have to be diligent no matter what the form of payment is.

I hope you made a police report.

The last I heard, counterfeiting is a federal crime.

Nightmare scenario! Did you have one of those pens, or how did you determine the bills were fake? How did the meeting play out?

with what seems like a recent surge in Rolex theft, perhaps tattoos + wearing a Rolex is the best combo. The thief's immediate logic would be 'not worth my time, has tattoos, 99.9% sure it's a fake'

How does a counterfeit detector pen work?

The counterfeit detector pen is extremely simple. It contains an iodine solution that reacts with the starch in wood-based paper to create a black stain. When the solution is applied to the fiber-based paper used in real bills, no discoloration occurs.
