Is the dealer facing any charges at this point?

Is there a clearinghouse of some sort for Rolex serial numbers that have been reported stolen? I'm just beginning my search for a Daytona and I'd love to be able to do a little specific serial research.

Although it’s not proven, it’s frightening to think that “reputable” grey market dealers partake in the knowing receipt and sale of stolen goods.

Most people who purchase from grey market dealers may not send their watches (Rolex in particular) for service for 10 years. Maybe that’s what these unscrupulous dealers are betting on.

Great to hear there may be a happy ending. A dealer in the UK has just been caught and imprisoned for knowingly receiving and selling stolen watches taken by moped thieves.

Yes, they are. I haven’t spoken to the detective since the subpoena was issued, but my recollection was the dealer will face both receipt of stolen property and sale of stolen property charges without full cooperation with the authorities in both jurisdictions.

Damn, if the dealer was innocent he/should have no problem working with the police. I guess he would be pretty bummed that he'd lose money on the SD but otherwise no other reason not to cooperate.

Makes you wonder if he's got anymore stolen watches in his inventory.

This is such great news to hear OP; I'd be heartbroken if any of my pieces were stolen. Do you mind sharing how you stored your watches prior to them being stolen? This makes me consider investing a heavy duty safety box in my home.

Your home being burglarized is a terrible experience. Glad that you recovered one already

The dealer will loose the money on all three watches. They will have to refund the purchase of the two sold watches to clear selling stolen property and return all three watches to the OP. The authorities will then see if they knowingly purchased stolen property. Highly unlikely, why would they sell them on a Worldwide forum. The OP will get all three watches back, the dealer is probably trying to figure out how to get his money from the guy he purchase them from. Time is not his friend.

Super glad (and more than a little amazed) you got one of the watches back. It's fairly unusual for a police department to be that responsive and pursue that type of crime aggressively. I applaud them.

Bear in mind the purchaser is out the money and the watch. Not your fault, but there's zero recovery for the purchaser (I'm assuming they're a legit innocent party) unless they get a refund from the seller. Regardless, happy for your partial recovery.

He’s not...but he wants to be sure of his next steps first.

Happy for the OP.

If this dealer fenced the 3 watches, likely other stolen ones landed on their lap.

If you lost a watch in the tristate, I'd want to know who this dealer is.

“Fencing” might not be the right word. I’m sure if I offered any of the established dealers on this site three full-set stainless professional models at a good price they would buy them from me. I’m sure they wouldn’t if they knew they were stolen but the thief wouldn’t advertise that. Let’s say they resell it to another member and now it turns out to be stolen. Everybody is trying to recoup money from somebody else.

Per the OP, the reseller isn’t being cooperative. This doesn’t help.

Regardless, seems to fit fencing’s definition.

Per your link the “fencer” must know it’s stolen. As I mentioned earlier I can trade in a brand new Rootbeer to any dealer on this forum if the price is right. If they resell to another forum member I wouldn’t accuse them of fencing if they didn’t know the original Rootbeer was stolen. Everybody ends up being a victim except the thief
