Why the Demand for Blue Dials?

My most recent watch purchase was an AP 15500 with a Blue Dial. Although I looked at other dial colors, I honestly never considered any of the other options and paid the significant premium for blue (yes I went grey and don't regret it one bit).

But in doing research I came to realize that there are other examples of blue dials being the most in demand, and therefore the most expensive. Nautilus, Royal Oak, VC Overseas, Skydweller, even the DJ (41 and 36). In many cases people pay thousands of extra dollars for the blue version of a watch (just as I did).

I know there are some cultural reasons why green watches are highly coveted, but does anyone know the reason for the high demand on blue dials? Is it the versatility? Or is there something else that people can think of.

Blue is both beautiful and soothing color. But I go with white DJ41 for different reason

I definitely agree that blue is both soothing and beautiful. It can even be exciting under the right light. My favorite DJ Color is Slate (Rhodium), but we can't deny that the most demand is for the blue (primarily blue sticks).

Although I personally enjoy blue dial watches, there is definitely a short term trend going on that’s driving prices through the roof.

Whether it will last or now, we’ll see.

My first two Rolex way back in the 80’s were blue dial Datejusts, first a SS/WG then a tutone. Blue dials have always been a staple of the watch world, the latest popularity fueled by the same interweb hype of SS Professionals.

Personally, I like the way blue dials interact and contrast with WG, SS, and titanium cases and bracelets. It's a handsome and pleasing look across the board.

This is a really solid point that I hadn't thought of. Blue does go very well with Stainless Steel which is by far the most popular material used in the luxury watch game. All of the models that I mentioned in the first post are steel watches that look amazing with the blue dial.

I know there are many that share this opinion (I am not one of them) and there are other reasons that Green is such a popular color for luxury items.

Blue is probably universally the most popular color that goes well with any combination other than the traditional black & white.

I suppose that is true. The shades of blue that are used on the most popular watches are very versatile. Blue is a color that you can dress up or down and it goes with just about everything.

Seems like blue watches have been popular for at least 2 decades (since the late 90s), it could last several more, and maybe forever.

Rolex blue dials are especially gorgeous, but other brands have nice blue watches too.

I want a blue dial watch myself. Ideally a DJ41.

Blue has always been my favourite colour (I’ve at different times had a blue deep sea, 5711, overseas and sky) and I think a lot of others think the same, although black is probably the most popular colour for a dial but I’d imagine a lot more are made, so less demand for higher grey pricing.

A blue dial steel Daytona would be the most sought after watch of all I’d say!

In many cases it works out more cost effective to change the dial to a blue dial rather than buying one already fitted.
Even in my case of a Datejust 41 it was worth it, bought a 2019 white dial at very competitive price then bought an azzurro blue dial for £600 from a trusted seller and paid my local watchmaker £100 to have it fitted
