AP ROO carbon

Hi all

I have fallen in love with the new AP Carbon ROO (pic is one on my wrist)
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1338017851.778379.jpg

I have a question on the durability and toughness of carbon in watches. I have read on a blog recently that carbon is not a good material for a watch case as it is prone to chipping.

Does anyone own a carbon watch and able to give some real life advice.

I do not baby my watches and love to wear them and do not want to buy something that I will be consistently worried about.

Any real life opinions very welcome before I pull the trigger.

Thanks!

Theo

Theo,
That is a beauty and i'd get it in a heartbeat if I could convince myself it fit me well. I think carbon makes an excellent case for a watch. It's light weight, has the tensile strength of steel, and masks scratches better than metal. It doesn't get hot in the sun. It's very under the radar. It's not a brittle material like ceramic and doesn't really chip. You can read more about the carbon case in my Bumblebee review. http://rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=235148

For all its pros, there are some cons. You can't polish it so if you have dings or scratches you want removed, you'll have to replace the case instead. It isn't cheap - $1212usd for a BumbleBee case. It frankly looks a little on the cheap side... my wife refers to it as the plastic watch. Some call it "stealth wealth" due to its cost vs low key appearance.

IMHO, Titanium with ceramic is the best of all worlds but that's pricey. I think the carbon/ceramic ROO is the best value vs performance at AP.

Thanks that's a comprehensive reply and appreciated. I have a couple of pieces with ceramic which I love. Was looking at the ROO or a hublot unico carbon (wanted all black but impossible to get). There is a big price difference between the two, the AP being my presence but more. Btw love your bumble bee carbon, congrats.

The Unico is an interesting piece but I think a ceramic bezel will stand up to daily wear better than a carbon bezel. I've seen some beat up carbon bezels on all carbon APs like the GP. I see the AP design as best... the LARGE and TALL ceramic bezel really shields the carbon case from most bruises and the lightness of carbon really makes it very wearable. The benefits of ceramic are quite evident on your GMTIIc and JLC - two great pieces btw.
