I worked as a Conservation Officer (Game Warden) here in Ontario . In about 1971 one of my collegues wore a Rolex Submariner given as a graduation gift from his father. One day during a boat patrol on the Detroit River we encountered a small wooden boat adrift in the river with a male occupant trying to repair the steering gear on the outboard engine. While my partner held the two boats together I hopped into the drifting boat and I was able to gerry rig a repair to the control cable. Just as I was finished a passing boat created a sizable wake which when it struck our patrol boat lifted it and brought the gunwhale back down against the gunwhale of the boat being held which scraped the wrist of my partner and broke the watch strap. It seemed like everything went into slow motion as I witnessed the Rolex flying in the air and then splashing into the murky water. There was no chance we could ever recover that watch as the rough water and current drifted the boats downstream. As a friend of mine often says "No good deed goes unpunished."

Nice to see this story get a conclusion - quite the happy ending.

Couldn't help noticing this part: "At Ric’s request, the brand had completely refurbished it and included the original parts with the watch."
