Classic Panerai Getting Hot Again

I’ve noticed a recent uptick in the value of my 111 Opx and 127 fiddy, while my Bronzo languishes at around the same price point of the past few years. I feel that there could be a resurgence in the early historical pieces. What do you guys think?

Hmmm... too busy wearing my 111. Good to know it’s is appreciating. My inability to get a bronzo or pronzo at a reasonable price had turned me off to buying any new Panerais to be honest.

Well, my last reply got moderated - probably because I used a bad word in there - but the short version (because I can’t retrieve the original to remove said word, and can’t be bothered to type it all out again) is ‘watch collection =/= stock portfolio’.

There is no ‘agreed value’ for a used watch, so any attempt to assign one - especially in the form of a ‘performance tracker’ is pretty ridiculous, IMO.

If you look at your watch, and the first thing you see is it’s resale value, you may have bought the wrong watch.

I’m glad I got my 111 earlier this year, been eyeing them for the past year or two.

Just been offered a 2019 968 bronzo at very low price, 30% off retail. What is going on with this piece? I thought it is the only Panerai that sells above msrp

I had been eyeing an 728 from a dealer, looks like it finally got snapped up! I think lots of spill over effects from Rolex making watches trendy lifting up non-Rolex brands now. (And of course Rolex benefiting from the oceans of Apple watch wearers making watches themselves part of a habit again).

Going for a night out violating quarantine? Do you break out the Apple watch of something more special?

I wouldn't be surprised. Early Paneristi era was brilliant. I might need to dig some of mine out. Been far too long

Is the underlying reason always really resale value.....or just that one's tastes and choices have been "validated"?

I can't see myself ever parting with my Fiddy.

Could be either - but, again, if one measures ones ‘validation’ solely in £/€/$, there’s a deeper problem, IMO. Is the value of something to me only truly measured by assessing its value to others?

It’s always interesting to have a conversation with folks about watches, but the monetary value of any given watch should not really enter into consideration.

Interesting or innovative design, exemplary manufacturing/finishing, historical provenance/significance... these are the things that pique my interest.

Give me a two-hour conversation with someone that bought an Omega 3570 Speedmaster because it’s the ‘quintessential Moon Watch’ over ten minutes listening to someone tell me how they managed to pick up a 116520 Daytona for MSRP, but now it’s worth x% more than that.

This is just to add more context to my initial comments. C24 current “average” value against my purchase price. Neither of these watches were over +5% for several years

That’s some nice photography, how does the lume compare to the sandwich dial models ? Mine is a 2006 sandwich.

Thanks! The lume is still robust. I’ve never had a sandwich dial for comparison though. I’d guess that being right on the dial it’s probably more diffuse and likely brighter but pure speculation on my part.
