In the mens room at SeaTac airport the “gentleman” in the stall next to me was fielding a business conference call while taking a dump. As it was interfering with my favorite quiet time of the day, I waited until he had it off mute and started talking to yell out “I am taking a dump in the airport right now.” Made a fast exit after stating my case while the whole restroom was laughing out loud.

At least I’m not alone.

And yeah, the walking and texting…while crossing the street thing…

Annoying as anything and also becoming the norm today. Such a shame to be honest.

I will never get the lack of self awareness these folks demonstrate. It drives me nuts. I don’t say anything bc I know it will lead to an argument and my back down button is often broken. It’s insanely rude imo

I approve that course of action. Guy at my co was taking a call while on the bowl so I made sure to kick open all of the stall doors to trigger the extra sensitive eyes on the flush valves

I see so many folks engrossed in their phones walking along oblivious. It's pretty hard to avoid someone coming the opposite way if they aren't looking. If they do look up it's usually with an expression of incredulity. Actually, the same face people have when I attempt to get out of an elevator while they are obliviously walking in.

I take my wireless bluetooth earphones with me all the time. Then I just turn on the ANC and enjoy the world in silence.

All three are unacceptable. People who do that just suck and do not care about others. All about themselves.

The entire scene was wrong. Going out for coffee, or a meal, everyone doing their own electronic thing. Yes, we see it all the time, the selfishness and rudeness to others is bad enough. But what about the stunted family dynamic, then they go home and play video games, watch TV. Yes, I am old school, but that doesn't mean I can't spot an undesirable social trend.

And the shop should post a sign - no speaker phones, keep your voice down.

Then don’t go to a Panera for an in-shop quite meal. Every corner booth seems to be a remote office “We Work” alternative workspace for the price of a cup of coffee.

So - to Seth’s good question:
Mitigating one’s ire over the device-addicted behaviors is the better path methinks.

Intervention is fraught with unintended consequences. Juice isn’t worth the Squeeze IYKWIM…

Except for a Public Library, my expectations for any indoor restaurant is more noise than that for which I wish.

Ah and this one..

At a busy Mall a couple of days ago I had to stop walking as 2 people came within 2 feet of a head-on collision with me.

True story…I was rear ended by a stroller-pushing texting Mom who was upset - she though I had “brake-checked her”.

If it gets mush worse, I’m having a horn surgically implanted

I find ANY cell phone usage that requires talking at length in a public space to be annoying, let alone face time. I get that calls come in, a brief conversation is OK, but when somebody is on the phone for a long time in public, it's rude. That's what phone booths were for.

Also I've started mountain biking again and I effing cant stand it when somebody in the group or another group needs to play their music on a cell phone or smart speaker while we ride.

They make these devices to be addictive and mission accomplished. Folks feel compelled to pick them up, touch them, use them, because the dopamine hit and classical conditioning. Thats why there will be no apple watch for me and 1) dont sleep with the thing on the same floor as me, 2) leave home on weekend, and 3) on airplane mode on vacation.

My wife is often aghast that I levea the house without it, and i gently remind her that I got on very well for my 24 years before my first cell phone and the first 30 years without a "smart phone" I see people on hikes, out in nature, eating, and they cant put the things down.

No phones while out to dinner for our family unless we are with a big group and all the other kids are on there's, then I'll let my son use his.

Bingo.

In this privately controlled, public space, your desire for silence is no more important than the other table's desire for noise. In this instance, it's up to the shopkeeper to do the monitoring, and if they allow it, then it's okay.

People are:

Rude
Stupid
Inconsiderate
Self-absorbed
Oblivious

Pick one or more.

In such a situation as the OP, I will usually get up and leave the establishment. I would like to say something, but these days you are likely to get into a heated argument, end up on Youtube, get assaulted and lose your job.

First I have to say I agree Seth.....but....
It's society, our modern technically connected 24/7 planet. People are posting and updating content and sharing and tik tokking instagramming facetiming family talking game playing emailing public zoom meeting having state of current affairs. What's the difference between a full coffee shop, restaurant, bar full of people talking out loud possibly with music versus a couple of people on their phones doing the talking via audio/video, debatable subject.
I remember when people talking out loud via their wireless buds looked weird.....can't change people, people seem to be becoming more rude and more sensitive. Karens are running rampant.....
In a situation where you feel you're the sane one, it's best to mind your business and walk away. Everybody is on their phone, you complaining about it will usually make you look like some deranged old man.

This is the kind of issue that more often than not, "you will be the psycho socially inept person".
These days I'm looking to be in the least stress producing situation possible, along with a healthy diet and exercise, a worry and peaceful mind is essential for a healthy long life.

Charm school.

That’s what missing in today’s world.

We had to go for two weeks a year to learn manners, which fork to use, and how to curtsy properly.

And teachers could whoop us if we misbehaved.

HEY moron, get that baby finger up when you drink that tea.

I have to begrudgingly agree. I hate people yapping on their phones as if they're trying to secure a billion dollar deal, but it's public free air space.
Public outside free space that's usually only managed by the establishment who doesn't really care...like the loud speaker in Kroger that says masks are required in the store, 30% of people have masks, the rest ignore it and the Kroger staff gives two sh&ts about it.
What am I going to do, enforce Kroger's own policy, that they don't enforce?

People take pictures with you in the back ground, you take pictures with people in the back ground, we have to share this public space and each person seemingly has their own set of rules of what they think they can do in said public space.
There are some basic things we can't do legally in public but all that grey area stuff that falls under manners, morals, etiquette, consideration and common sense is all up for individual levels of education, interpretation and perspective.

I just downloaded iOS 14.8 and now you have to create a social media profile in Apple Music to be able to listen to your own music that you pay for. I just spent the last hour on the phone with Apple to come up with a solution that let me opt out and none exists. Therefore my subscription to Apple Music, my subscription to AppleCare+, my extra iCloud purchase and my Apple Card will all be going away, as well as my iphone (when I actually was entertaining the idea of upgrading to a 13 in the next month or two). Incredibly too much overreach with all of these tech companies these days. I love my iPhone but will not keep it if I can’t listen to music on it without my location, pictures, text and phone calls and everything else under the sun being tracked. Let alone the fact you’re now available to be followed by any random Tom, Dick or Harry without the option to just listen to the music you pay for in the privacy of your own headphones without being part of Apples new social media service.

I am incensed. Sorry for going off topic on your thread Seth.

That’s the problem with the updates, and they’ll probably fix that in later versions. But all these programmers are products of their times and they wrongly assume EVERYONE has social media profiles and accounts. It may not dawn on them you don’t.

I don’t have Apple Music but have a few thousand songs on my iTunes playlists and I assume that one day they’ll screw me with this even though I paid tons of money to buy them.

I find that with some sites now that in order to log in you need a google account, Facebook or Twitter account. I have none of those things.

Yeah, I’m more than pissed to say the least. Putting my headphones in, in my garage at the end of a rough day was my way of decompressing. Apple just took a big hearty you know what on that. I will say the customer service was impeccable though, other than my call got dropped after being on hold for 20 mins as the little girl tried to figure out if there was a way to opt out.

I hate FaceTime as well. All of that experience is annoying, totally on board. I think it’s ridiculous that an entire family is out to dinner together and all laser focused on their devices. What’s the point of being together? Have a conversation. If you’re alone eating staring at your phone that’s a different story, but you still don’t need to be disruptive to others.
