Bonkers... also, anyone buying this as an investment and not selling above $100k is also nuts

Now the watch market is a strange place and there is so much inter dealer purchasing going on that prices can move up without any change to actual demand, in the same way they can drop back very quickly when the dealers realise the new high water mark that they falsely set doesn't represent the real market demand.

Only time will tell. I personally look forward to the new piece as a few changes will really make it a better piece - still only to be purchased at MSRP though.
What changes do you think would make it better? I mean it seriously because I've thought about it and cannot come up with anything other than the clasp being improved.

Screwed links, color datewheel, improved movement.

I agree with this, along with screws - not much to improve upon really in my eyes.

Forgive my ignorance, but as I am next to get a 5711 at my AD (assuming one comes before the discontinuation), I am interested in the current clasp issue. What exactly is the problem?

Just a little cumbersome to use. Compare the clasp of the 5711 with the new one on the 5740.

earlier versions of the 5712/1a (maybe until 2011 or 2012?..) did have screw-secured links, rather than pins. they changed to pins, perhaps a bit controversially, with the rationale that the screws were getting bent during bracelet adjustment. Not sure if that's really the case, or it was more a cost-savings change.

I do not know if the 5711/1a ever utilized screws in its bracelet?

It did. I have one from 2007 or 2008 with screws in the bracelet. Also has the 315 movement.

My 5711/1a from 2012(ish) has screws in the bracelet.

But ... are they actually being sold at these prices? List is a whole different story, in some cases.

I think it all depends on the new model, I bought my 5711 in 2013 and was a bit unimpressed when I saw it, I couldn’t imagine paying list price never mind $90k

Changed to pins about 2014 with the introduction of the white dial model.
