I took a bath on that one..

Then, a Pam 005. Beautiful watch and definitely scratched an itch. Again, a purchase I said I would never sell. Famous last words.. Even with the price increase, I’ll lose around $1.2k when I do the deal this week.

My takeaway here is, never say never when it comes to selling and always think about resale value when making a purchase. Then, only purchase Rolex. I know AP and PP hold and increase in value, just like a few RM’s. But for me, I’ve never lost on a Rolex, and I have learned my lesson.

Thanks for listening.
resale and availability is linked.... so you cant complain about not being able to get a particular watch if you want stellar resale too.

I took a bath on my 116655 FWIW

Well put Dan, my sentiments exactly.

While Rolex is known for great resale and a few of mine would sell for more than MSRP, most of them I would likely lose money on. They are not seen as investments by me.

I’m pretty shocked at the comments. I was sharing an opinion, and I appreciate contrary ones, but the level of judgement and condescension here has taken me by surprise. The suggestions that I’m new to this game, not successful enough to afford the loss, etc, are wild. And humorous.

I don’t view watches as investments, but if I can focus my interest to a watch that won’t lose money, then I’ll try that.

I don’t post often but my background is in financial services. I’m passionate about timepieces but I try not be emotional. Also:

1. I’ve been collecting luxury timepieces for 20 years.
2. I run a $100m business that specializes in financial services consulting.
3. My watch collection hovers around $100k
4. I hate losses. Whether it’s a Tahoe, a Porsche, Leica, a custom Baker dining set or a watch. I’ve lost on things aforementioned. Ironically enough I have never lost on a boat...

My post was just to reflect the hate of a loss and my experience of never losing on a Rolex.

Thanks for listening.

I agree with you 100%.

What did you buy and sell yours for if you don’t mind my asking?

probably close to 5k loss. If you sell it yourself its going to take a long time but you can get a better price.

I did fairly well too on the buy price since i paid in dollars in the UK since its cheaper to buy watches there to begin with and still lost a bunch.

Thanks for sharing. Rolex MSRP is I think is $26.xK. This AD was asking $24.x, and I got it for less than that. I saw pre owned for $21-$22k, and figured the delta was worth it for new.

IMO its worth it new for that delta.... but you are not getting that preowned price if you sell it. a dealer is going to offer way below that and its not exactly a quick mover either

it would have been a keeper for me except i struggle with RG watches and the no end links makes it wear a tad small. I love the idea of that watch though, its a beauty. I think its the nicest RG watch in the Rolex lineup by a mile

Thanks for the opinion, and for sharing. I appreciate your input, and your serious collection. It does feel a little small, but the RG looked good with my skin tone and the wife loved it on me as much I did. Which, I think, always helps.

You have a JLC tribute to deepsea alarm?. I think that's a great watch. I may never look at it the same however. Either way I'll remember this thread if I ever see it up for sale.

Haha, I’m glad I left a lasting impression. Yes, I own the Euro dial. It’s a great watch, despite this guy hating it because it’s not a Rolex (although it has appreciated in value since I bought it, which is the apparent litmus test for horology).

The JLC deep sea alarm was actually on my list before I got the FF. I love the idea of having an alarm function on a watch, it will be very useful to me. Either this, a JLC master memovox, or blancpain reveil GMT is on my "next" list. I actually admire the variety of collection that Speedmaster has, and a bit envious of the milspec. I spend for the happiness and enjoyment that the watch brings me. I wouldn't worry about the loss of value otherwise I would not enjoy owning the watch at all. 7 years ago I lost $1000 on a rolex DJ I bought discounted from a rolex boutique and sold a year after (to add funds for a SD). I did not lose a night of sleep at all and was elated at next purchase I did. I guess to each his own.

IMHO JLC Tribute Deep Sea Alarm is an awesome watch that I have pondered acquiring since it first came out. And the European dial is the one to get. Did I say AWESOME watch? You've got good taste Speedmaster.

Many thanks both.
Highly recommend it. Aesthetics aside (which I personally love), it's been very reliable, has great proportions, isn't too thick and the plexiglass is a welcomed change from the typical cold sapphire.

Marchy, would your use for an alarm be for diving/swimming? Just asking because this alarm function is made for water resonance and isn't much use outside of water.

I just go for the watch that makes me happy. Luckily Rolex is one of them but I do love omega and seiko. Can I say seiko here, I own the Pogue and love it.

Shit they waive bond in front of you how could you pass! He makes such a good bond as well I’m glad he did take it. Hell we had this argument several times before on here already

I just do recreational diving but i get to go to the beach or the sea a lot. How is the alarm out of water, I mean not much sound? I was meaning to ask you about the JLC. It was high on my list and I was supposed to go to Hong Kong to either get this, the JLC Master alarm or the FF. Did not get to go because of the rallies.

The alarm has a charming mechanical sound, but it's not particularly loud; it's more made to vibrate and cause a resonance.

I think the watch is a great chameleon. For a sports watch, it's very thin and wearable for average wrists while retaining 100M WR. It can also easily be dressed up and worn with a suit.
