5712 has my vote (I own both), but you seem set on the 5711. That indicates to me you should wait. When I bought my 5712, it wasn’t my second choice. I bought my 5711 five years later.

I'm biased, but for me it would be the 5712. I adore mine and I find it much more interesting and charming than the 5711.
The 12 would be a wonderful companion to the 5164a, which is the PP combo I'm going for as well. |

I would get the 5712A now and wait for the 5711A, then decide what to do. Patek would not consider you as a flipper if you sell a watch after having it for some time to get another.

I think the 11' and 64' would be my ideal combo, but I prefer the simplicity of the dial.

Wait for the 5711 if you are hesitating. 5711 is a far better sports watch water resistant to 120m. 5712 is too complicated and only WR to 60m due to the correctors. Plus, you need a winder for the 5712 unless you want to keep setting it which is not recommended. The movement in the 5712 has been around for a while being cased as strap watches none of which were stellar sellers. The movement only became popular in the Nautilus. Funny how that works.

We should hope so. But if you are after an application piece from Patek they might want to see you still have every piece you have ever bought.

Yea... there is nothing wrong w setting the 5712 as often as you want. I think winders are a waste, except perhaps for a AC or PC. Also, with regard to water reistance, most of us are not going diving with a 5711 or 5712... I can’t imagine a scenario where I would be taking my 5712 180 feet under water.

I'd buy it.
If after a while it doesn't do it for you, flip it for a profit.

Thank you all for your helpful comments! I absolutely won’t be diving with any PP and right now I have no intention to sell the 5164.
I tried on the 5712 last night and it’s superb as I expected it to be. Question still remains if I prefer the 5711 or 5712. I’m not sure I will ever reconcile that... Right now I’m leaning towards getting it and seeing how I go whilst still being on the list for the 5711. When it arrives I can make a decision. To flip the 5712 or keep it and be happy with my choice. Would it be an issue if I flip within 6-12 months? I’d be perfectly open with the AD of course. |

If the 5711 comes available and you want/need to sell the 5712 to make it happen, it's none of their business to be honest. I cannot believe we are scared of the AD these days to sell what we buy with our own money for fear of them not selling to us again. It's freakin unreal.... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

What they don't like is some one obtaining a difficult to get piece and selling it straight away or some one buying and selling the same watch multiple times. I don't think it will be an issue if you decide to move the 5172A or 5164A to get the 5711A |

So it's not recommended from a convenience standpoint? That's not the way I read his note. To me, he was implying it was bad for the movement, which is horse . Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

Unlikely, unless the AD isn't worth buying from in the first place.

Get the 5712 now and decide what to do when 5711 comes. Perhaps you might not like the 5711 by that time? I personally love both and like how the 5712 wears.

HK guy here too. Excellent knowledge of how the system works.
The "waiting lists" are really not ranked in order and people can jump the queue. It's mostly decided by Libertas (the PP distributor in HK) after the AD hands them your name. The scenario right now is that your AD feels you aren't "ready" for a 5711 yet, given the 15 month wait for both 5711 and 5712. I got my 5711 as a fresh client of my AD within a few months after putting my name down. I was told "it was [the distributor's] decision, not our [AD's] decision." I've also had several friends get their 5711 and 5712 within a few months after putting their name down (as fresh clients with no history). One of them got their 5711 several months after their 5712. So the inventory is definitely there, it's all a matter of your distributor agreeing on who to sell it to. So if your AD felt you were ready for a 5711 (or "worthy" as some of my friends say), they would have allocated one to you already. So here it appears your AD feels you are now ready for a 5712, but not 5711. Knowing the practice here in Hong Kong, I would advise you to buy the 5712. Wear it and visit your AD, telling him/her how much you love it and hinting that you'd love to get the 5711 too. Hopefully that will help your chances of getting the 5711 eventually. I am not saying this to offend you in any way when I mention being "ready" or "worthy" - that's just how it works here, from my personal experience. |
