Datejust 36mm vs GMT Master II

I recently purchased a 36mm Datejust. It's so gosh darn cute.

But I'm not sure how I feel about the size. It feels so small compared to my GMT that I wear almost daily.

Does anyone else go through size-shock when switching between two differently sized models?

I have only one watch (Explorer 39mm) but does the DJ not give a high-quality and solid enough feel when putting it on? It is still a Rolex so should still have some heft to it, although the GMT is much bigger. Maybe you should try the DJ41, I did and it has a great size.

Lol. This is the first time I've ever heard of a Rolex described as cute. I guess that's appropriate though considering the topic of this thread.

36mm has been the standard size of a men's Rolex for many years. It's only fairly recently that larger watches are becoming the trend. For me, I have a small wrist and a 36mm fits me nicely. Feels right and is very comfortable. I do love the look of the larger watches but something like an SD43 is just way too big for me. A 40mm is about as large as I can pull off. I am however, considering a DJ41. It's a tad larger than I would like, but I think I could live with it since it looks so good to me. I'm thinking that you should give a DJ41 a try? I'm suspecting from your post here that you might have a larger wrist?

I dislike the DJ in 41mm...I’d see the 36mm and think “that’s what I wanted...”

Yes, going from DSSD or YMII to 16700 is a huge difference but I still love my 16700.

I recently tried on a DJ 36 at a local AD. I definitely noticed the relative lack of size compared to my Sub. The term shocking isn't an exaggeration. At first, I was thinking it's way too small, but then I tried on a DJ 41, and I liked the 36 better for this style watch.

Also, I think I sort of liked the size difference between the Sub and DJ 36. I'm thinking they balance each other out.

Of course, I don't have one like you do, so keep that in mind. I decided not to buy anything, but I think I will get a 36 sometime in the future.

Wear it exclusively for a couple of weeks.
Then it will feel like the correct size

It definitely seems small compared to 40mm+ sports watches, but I feel the smaller size compliments the style well; for a watch that tends to be more ‘dress’ than ‘sports’, I like that it can fit unobtrusively under a cuff.

No problems with it, switching on regular basis from my subC <>DD36mm.

We all have our own, personal size threshold. For me, the 36mm DJ represents the small-end boundary, and of the watches I've owned, the Seiko MM300 (at 44mm) represents the large-end boundary.

A 36mm DJ has heft and proportions that feel great to me.

I alternate between an Air-King, black bay black and an OP 36. Because the OP is almost all dial, it doesn’t feel or look small on my wrist. The 36mm is an elegant size in my opinion.

I have a 36mm datejust and Tudor Black Bay GMT. It took a while to get used to the Black Bay GMT, but I love the combo of the dressy datejust and the vintage style of the Tudor Black Bay GMT.

I switch between my 36mm DD and Six digit subs often. Used to own a 36mm DJ as well. My wrist is 7.25in , no issues although if I was wearing a sub for a long stretch the 36 might look a little small for a few hours until I adjust to the look. Go with what you think looks good on you.

I don't think my 36mm DJ feels that much smaller than my 40mm Sub. They both have the same size bracelet, and the dial on the DJ actually has a larger diameter than the Sub. Ironically, my Sub feels closer in size to my 36mm DJ than it does to a DJ41, which is closer in size on paper--completely different feel on the wrist to me.

Am certain you feel that way because you've grown use to the GMT as its been a daily wear for you. the DJ is great, just give it the time it needs to adjust its way into your heart lol

No issue at all. Also based on some the of comments about men not wearing a 36. Some guys with these little bony arms should not be wearing these subs. Looks like a kid trying on daddy's watch. So it works both ways

You cannot compare a dress watch (36mm) to a sports watch (40mm). if you like sports watches a dress watch will seem small. One is not better than the other. Just a matter of taste and style.

I have both watches, a ceramic GMT and a TT 36MM DJ. Whilst I do notice the different size they are a different style of watch so it doesnt bother me.

I have a 7 inch wrist, but with pretty big hands and I don't think the DJ looks too small at all.

I used to have a late 80's Air King, that was 34mm, the 2mm less made a massive difference for me and felt too small.
