1st Rolex purchase for a 20 yr old
Hi guys. I am a 20 year old New Yorker and looking to purchase my first Rolex.
I have a budget of around $10,000, I like the look of the Batman gmt but it seems impossible to get... Any Other recommendations, I want something that will retain its value Incase I want to swap it out. Or any advice on purchasing my 1st watch as far as how to go about it, not getting taken for an idiot for being young, or any other thought? |

Wempe on 5th ave or Watches of Switzerland in Soho have great service and the staff is really knowledgeable. As for which watch to get, a sub nd is a classic

My first thought would also be a Sub but you may find it exceptionally difficult to find one right now, especially given where you're located. I guess it depends on how patient you're willing to be. If you'd like something sooner rather than later look at the Explorer or perhaps the Explorer II.

Welcome to the forums. We’d need a bit more information to help you though.
Are you a student, do you work? Are you a sporty type? Do you have conservative or outgoing tastes in fashion etc.? What do you want a watch for? What drew you to Rolex? |

Any Sub with or without date, GMT LN. I also love the Explorer II with the polar dial.

I am a full time student, and work full time as an Allstate insurance salesman. My style is very minimal outside of work, but casual at work. I want a watch that I can wear with anything( that’s the only thing that concerns me about the Batman) My family all wear Rolex avidly

116710 GMT - I really enjoyed the GMT functionality of my Batman when I had it - IMO more useful than a submariner bezel

Put your name down for a Daytona; you're young enough to have time to wait.
In truth, I'm not so sure Rolex is a cool watch for younger people. Average purchaser is in their sixties. Maybe experiment for a few years? Rolex will still be around. We all end-up with them. |

Based on your question, I suggest Submariner. Sub easier to source then BLNR. If you get Sub from AD, work with him/her to get BLNR. This is from my experience.

My first purchase was a datejust with an oyster bracelet and fluted bezel back when I was 20. I think subs are awesome but in my opinion a nice datejust would be great for you and your age. Go to david sw or the for sale on this forum and you can find you a very nice datejust for under 10k new. It will be way easier to find a new datejust than a new sub and probably save some money in my opinion. I just feel like for your age the datejust is a better all around watch. I dressed pretty trendy at 20 it fit me perfect. Happy hunting and post photos when you get one. I purchased a new in box datejust 41 with non fluted bezel for under 7,000 last week. If you were my age around late 30s then I would say sub all day long. Not that a sub is not a amazing watch. I love subs but that is just my 2 cents and then some !!

Submariner or GMT is a great first watch. Can build a great collection with either of those as a cornerstone.

Buy a datejust for under retail and you should be able to retain your value. Do not do like some of us newer members did and pay over retail for a watch unless if you really want it. The reason is I have seen a wave of new members like myself join and post that they picked up some of these harder to get pieces paying over retail getting caught up in the hype. Don’t get me wrong I love my hulk and Batman but if I was to sale today I probably would barely break even on them. Chances are it might not be the best investment for these. Or if you really want a batman wait until after baselworld in March see what comes out new. stay way from the hype of these rare pieces if you can. Chances are you can pick up the Batman in a few years for a decent price if I had to guess. Anything like the subs and gmts stainless most of them are going very close to retail or even over. For a first time buyer get you a deal new in box that way you can make sure you even enjoy having one and plan to keep it then add more pieces or trade up !!

I think an Explorer or a white OP 39mm would make a great first Rolex. While the more popular sports models are likely to retain their value better should you decide flip, either of the two that I mentioned should do well at resale, too. On top of that, you'll still have some $$$ left to start saving for your next model, whether you decide to add another or trade up. Good luck in your decision!

I’ve been a fan for a long time, and have a decent watch knowledge. Influenced mainly by my grandpa who mainly wears an old all gold sub with a black face and has a bunch of different brands.

I'm 20 too. Go for a sub, or Black GMT. Daytona if you can swing it.

Given your frame and wrist size, I'd go with the Sea-Dweller 126600. It'll look perfect on you, is incredibly versatile, and is a bit more exciting than a black Sub or GMT.
Also, ignore anyone who says you're too young to wear a Rolex -- if you have the means to get one, then you're old enough, whether you're 15 or 65.

Don't be afraid of the TT. They are very nice and come with a bit more shine, nothing to be afraid of though. If you get one now, it will be good scratched up enough for it to be...less shiny, come June.
