Next time Watchulook lists a 5167, show him a screenshot and negotiate a big stigma discount.

I'm not a fan of the Aquanaut nor any of its variants, but that's a ludicrous advert. Mind you, I've been suffering from entry-level Rolexitis for the past five days, and I can highly recommend it!

So is it really a thing that people can be made to feel "less than" for owning a Patek that cost the better part of $20k?

What a world we live in.

Well I owned the 5711 and got rid of it three months later. Just didn't resonate with me. Fast forward I now own an Aquanaut and it's my daily wearer so I guess I did things in reverse. It's not always about the money...it's about your personal preference.

I think the stigma comes because a minority of collectors compare it against the Nautilus (the other PP sportswatch), which is more iconic and a fair whack more expensive. The general theory is that the owner must have settled for the Aquanaut, because if they had the money, they obvioulsy would have bought the Nautilus. To me, this is absolute nonsense, but hopefully that somewhat explains this odd view.

I think a lot of it is how is meant or phrased. Because no matter what, any brand will have a model that is the most expensive and a model that is the cheapest or entry level. If you refer to it as description denoting the fact that is the entry level of the catalogue is fine. What is wrong is when they do it in a derogative way implying that is inferior , that I condemn 100%

I'm going through this as well. I had gotten a 5167a about a year ago. In my pursuit of a Nautilus, I let it go a short time afterwards. After months and months chasing I purchased a 5711 blue dial. The 5711 blue is an absolutely stunning piece, however, for my lifestyle on the more casual side I preferred the 5167. I find the 5167 is much better looking in the flesh than pictures portray, and is just a super comfortable stealthy piece. Anyway out went the 5711 perhaps not forever and I will be getting another 5167 shortly.

No Patek is entry level. They are all beautiful pieces of wearable art.

As much as the blue dial 5711 is mesmerising, so is the 5167 and it's not until you handle it that you can see it, photos don't do either watch justice.
This was my attempt at capturing the dial of the 5167:

A stainless watch with a rubber bracelet and only a date complication for nearly $20k, obviously aimed at the poor watch enthusiast!

Absolutely right. I recently bought Rolex's entry-level OP 39, and am I worried that it's entry-level? Nope, it looks incredible. A real credit to Rolex for offering this at the price:

The add seems to aimed at 'marketing' or 'status driven' person. Not the guy I would want to hang with and chat about any material object I may share with him:)

Smart money is often on the 'entry level' Rolex's or Patek's. Compare % lost from new purchase to used sales values of Submariner vs. DD40 or Aquanaut vs. 5726 for example...

This type of attitude is toxic, is it not? With this mentality, when will your watch be good enough? I remember trying on my first Aquanaut and looking at the beautiful gold rotor and dial. Owning an aquanaut is something that is truly exclusive, rare and in my opinion certainly not to be scoffed at. In what real-life circle will someone feel this way? According to this gentleman, I should be ashamed of aquanaut ownership? Is there an 'aquanaut' stigma that I was unaware of?

Apply this principal to any material goods, is it even possible to be happy with what you have? There is always something more expensive and 'better.' Personally, I'm going to just be happy to have the fine timepieces I have and maybe, just maybe, one day I can own a Patek that isn't "looked down upon."
Why are you even letting this loser bother you? Buy what you want, what makes you happy. The opinion of others shouldn't matter or affect your mindset. And I think this Aquanaut stigma is complete bull. I guess my 15400 is an entry level AP and should be looked down upon as well.

I totally agree with you OP (and most everyone else).

I will however just say this. I don't know if the 5167 is the cheapest gentlemans watch, but I know it's at the least one of the most affordable men's watches available. So the bottom line is that from a price point, it may very well fall into the literal financial "entry" level.

I personally don't see things this way which has been summed up as a "stigma", but the existence is certainly real whether you subscribe to the notion or not.

I actually like watches. I have a Patek, Rolexes and other luxury brands. I have Seiko, a Timex, Hamiltons. I value them for their look, not how much they cost. Almost no one notices them or knows what they cost . Most WIS are not status seekers from my experience.

thats the difference between a true enthusiast and someone who is image obsessed !

I had my 5167 at the same time as my 5270g and 5960p.. I appreciated the 5167 AS MUCH or more so than the others, and obviously loved them all as well as my other watch, cheap or expensive.

Don't let ignoramuses bother you
