Looks like a Mark 5 dial. There is one for the record books. A 5.1m case with Mark 5 dial. I have seen about 4 of these in my lifetime with this combination. Clearly this was one of the very first Mark 5 dials installed in 5.1m cases.
Someone add this to the dial archives, I'm pretty sure its correct :) |

I always shake my head when I see a photo of someone handling a Rolex with white cotton curators gloves but I think in the case of this one I would want to do the same.
Congratulations on getting to own a treasure like this. The temptation to put it on for a special occasion and wearing it out must be painful. |

Hi,
Very very nice condition watch, but it is my opinion that the case has been refinished before. The number 1 reason I believe this is because of the lug holes. When watch is polished, the sharp edges of the lug hole on the outside inevitably dull and create a "crater" like appearance. So, instead of a sharp round edge, we end up with kind of a cratered looking hole. Please take a look at this image: Number 2 reason are the crown guards. From factory, the top of the crown guard has brushed finish, then a defined/sharp edge going into a high polished finish. As we see in picture below, the "edge" is rounded off, specially on the top crown guard. Number 3 reason is found after examining the under side of the case. The underside is brushed from factory, but a very even and distinct brushed finished used by Rolex. In this picture I can see partial loss/change in structure of this brushed finish, most likely being done by polishing wheel catching underside while the side is being polished. Reason #4 comes to me from examining the top of the lug. Again, Rolex used a very precise and distinct brushed finish. It is always very even, same strokes throughout. As it appears from the picture below, the lower left lug actually has some concentric finish, instead of angled, but straight brush strokes. It also appears to be uneven, with some strokes being much more defined than others. PLEASE, do not take this as anything but educated observation. The watch is in fantastic condition, still and you should be happy with it. Unfortunately, the term "unpolished" is used and abused in the industry and I only want to bring this to your attention in case you paid a high premium for "unpolished" watch as advertised by someone. Again, this is my opinion and constructive criticism only. |

Hi Kirill, no problem, thanks for your hints, but I donīt think, that you are right. Itīs always a difference to judge based on photos and to have the watch in your hands and check it with a loupe or something even better. Three big collectors in our german rolex forum scanned this watch very very carefully. One of them is an expert who works for Rolex Geneva since many years. All three were 100% sure, that this watch was never polished or refinished.......
I am no expert, but I think that they are right. |

For example watch this pic. Do you see on the left lug any straight brush strokes, that appear uneven or some strokes being much more defined than others ? Or do you see concentric finish on the left lug ?
If you judge by photos, much depends on the angle, on reflexes..... |

Very interesting. All subjective Ofcourse. Love to see what Springer thinks, just off curiosity. Here is my MK V in what I think is unpolished condition. Not unworn Ofcourse! I am not that lucky ;) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

How much variation in case finish is there with this model. I ask mainly about the treatment of the crown guards, esp. the front. My two are from 68 and the guards are flat straight up and then abruptly curved and polished on top to the rear. When I got my first one I thought that I surely missed that poorly done detail but after a while of comparing photos came to conclude this was how they were done at that time.
My next one verified this conclusion and a side by side comparison shows them to be so close in profile and finish that they can be called identical. Did this change towards the end of the 1675 run? Mine hail from the 191xxx and 193xxx serial range, don't have the case back dates on either. |

I donīt know. if it makes sense to compare, but I am lucky also to have an 16760 fatlady (nodate, fullset).... :-)) Itīs supposed to be untouched.
Itīs from 1984, therefore 7 years later. But maybe we can compare the structure on the top of the lugs...... Finally we should not forget, that there was much manual labour 40 years ago...... (hope you understand what I mean, because my english is not so good) |

(hope you understand what I mean, because my english is not so good) That's exactly why I question things being different during different era's. It's possible that the two that I have could have been done by the same hand, 10 years later different people, different styles. If this were a question about a 2010 watch I think the matter of hand finishing differences might be much less or not at all. |
