I have been offered a Rolex Submariner Red with tropical dial. My question is if the tropical dial happens only in "meters first" dials because the one for sale looks like it has a Mk5 "feet first" dial? Your thoughts would be highly appreciated.

My understanding is that tropical is most common on Mk2 meters first dials. I had not seen a feet first tropical dial but then again I haven't been looking...

I seem to recall seeing the occasional MKIV going slightly tropical as well, but not many.

I thought I read somewhere (on this site or VRF maybe?) that true tropical dials only really occur on gilt dials. Is that not correct?

a well known dealer on this site has one in his personal collection. Makes sense as some paint was likely held over. Very cool. Very rare. Buy after you check it out but i would buy.

I know Andrew Shear had one before. In this case I am not too convinced as I think the puffy lume is later which could suggest the tropical brown color is actually water damage.

Just thinking out loud.. :)

Erpin, the dial is fake. Compare with a genuine MK5 red sub dial and the font alignment will be the first giveaway. The shiny, crystalline lume is another giveaway.

I will view the watch tomorrow and will compare it with my mk5 single red sub. I am bringing also my watchmaker because i will insist on opening the watch so i can check the edges of the dial for signs of the original black paint.

The dial is a feet first, so, let's see, that would make it a Mark IV, V or VI. It is not a Mark IV, V, VI so that would mean it is something else - another one of the fake dials proliferating the hobby these days.

Why waste any time going to see it?

The dial is an obvious fake when comparing it to any real feet first dial. I hope it is not being sold by a "reputable" dealer.

I cannot comment for sure based on the 1 picture you provided.

I can tell you that while it is extremely rare, ft first chocolate dials do exist. I have a mk5 that is going brown. I know Andrew Shear had one and might still have it.

I wouldn't say mine is extreme tropical chocolate but it is deff on its way. pic below

I think they were referring to an example of none-meter first tropical dial. The one on the site though is MK4. It is actually brownish not tropical at least to my eyes
