Decided to branch out a bit from my typical Japanese whiskeys. Let's see how it is.

HH was slightly off (muted).

Vote was split on the Old Crow and Sunny Brook. Came down to if you liked smooth (SB) versus more robust (OC). OC wins the QPR hands down, though.

I'm a fan of Angel's Envy, hands down drink it straight or on a block of ice ... the Rye is much more expensive, and I don't feel you will get any more of the wow factor of this bourbon!

Lincoln Henderson passed on recently ... but his legacy lives on in that bottle! Good stuff!

If you make Old Fashions ... use a cheaper bourbon.

That looks like a killer trip! Woodford is a go-to, and Maker's is a favorite (especially the cask strength!). I have the Willett 4 Year rye, but can't really connect with it. I've heard their bourbon is amazing, and I have to assume it is considering how hard it is to find. Hopefully you were able to pick up a few bottles of some good stuff!

Everyone seems to love that stuff, but I can't get behind it. Port finishes in bourbons seem to leave it too sweet for me. And using it in an Old Fashioned would make it even sweeter! I would choose a higher proof (100+ proof) bourbon for an Old Fashioned, so the alcohol still presents itself instead of getting washed away in sweetness...

That said, the Barrel Dovetail (a blend of bourbons finished in Rum, Port, and Cabernet barrels) is several steps above and isn't overly sweet, probably because of the higher proof (120+ proof). If you find it, pick up a bottle.

Definitely ... that’s why I suggest drinking the AE neat or just an ice ball .. the sweetness is subtle .. nothing else is needed.

We visited 6 distilleries in 2 days for a friends 40th. Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve, Wild Turkey, Jim Beam, Willet and Makers.

Took about 140 pictures and learned alot about the bourbon craft. I should do a write up in the general section.

I've got a dusty 1984 bottle of Wild Turkey 101 en route to me, looking forward to popping it open, hopefully before the new year... What year is that WT 101 from?

The Whisky Thread

My Monday morning whiskey run was more successful than usual yesterday. I’ve been looking for a second bottle of Jack Daniel’s Heritage Barrel release from last year, but secondary has it higher than I’m ready to pay for it. I’ve been on Wine Searcher for months looking and all of a sudden this one popped up at my local Total Wine. I hadn’t seen it there before, so I made the trip hoping it was a forgotten bottle the distributor had laying around... turns out it was stuffed in the back of the Jack Single Barrel shelf, hiding in plain sight. I quickly looked for any more, but that was the only one. Best $65 I’ve ever spent on whiskey, twice.

The Rebel Yell 10 Year was a surprise. I was about to leave my favorite shop with a bottle of EH Taylor small batch, when the manager (with whom I’m trying to build a relationship, in hopes of getting the new ER17... #longshot ) hit me up to chat. He knows me by now, and we had talked about the Rebel Yell months ago. He pulls it out of the back and asks if I want it. Yes, yes I do.

Then I popped my SFTB when I got home and was knocking a few things off the Honey-Do list. I’d promised a buddy of mine a sample, so I needed to get that done and figured he couldn’t beat me to trying it! Suffice it to say, Monday was a good day.

Cheers!

At home it's Midleton and Red Breast, but I do like Oban and Laugavulin as well.

Does anyone definitively know whether I'll run into any issues having this in my checked luggage? I found the following on a TSA site:

Checked Baggage

Any amount of alcohol greater than 3.4 ounces must be packed in checked baggage.
Alcoholic beverages with more than 70% alcohol content (140 proof), including 95% grain alcohol and 150 proof rum, cannot be packed in checked luggage.
Travelers may take up to five liters of alcohol with alcohol content between 24% and 70% per person as checked luggage if it’s packaged in a sealable bottle or flask.
Alcoholic beverages with less than 24% alcohol content are not subject to hazardous materials regulations.

This will be on an international flight, if it makes a difference.

I doubt you will have any issues with checked baggage. Have always been able to bring back liquor in my suitcase without a problem.

Watches were made to be worn and whiskey is for drinking! If you’ve never had it, definitely open it. Life is short and who knows when you’ll have the opportunity to get another bottle again?

I love Getchyo self some Talisker. It's pretty unique; an island whiskey from Skye, tastes like you're drinking the essence of an old Scottish professor of Norse literature sitting in a leather armchair wearing a smoking jacket made of peat.

Had several individuals (including my boss) recommend Campfire with high praises, but I think the peatiness ends up overpowering the mid notes and finishes they insist are present. I suppose my palate isn’t matured to handle peat yet lol.

Everyone’s palate is obviously different.

But every now and then, I’m reminded that some folks’ palates are more like a feral pig in what they consider to be tasty.......

I think that’s one of the fun things about whisk(e)y though— everyone has a different palate not just by simple preferences but also what’s been defined by their environment :)
