*Old, Old Tools: Woodworkers / Machinists. Who Likes Tools Like These?
.
Hey Guys: Well, I'm still organizing after Hurricane Matthew. I found these (inherited) tools in an old chest of drawers in the garage. (Please see pics below that Tim is assisting with posting them for me). What do you think? Anything that particularly stands out to you as exceptional for either a collector of tools or putting them to use today? I personally love this type of stuff, and imagine the hard working hands of generations past that used them to make a living. Majority are marked USA. Some most likely in the antique category. A few old electrical devices as well. PMs welcome. ... Thanks, DM

I bet a professional wood worker will like them for their workshop.

Definitely a Jack of all trades it. Woodworking, machinists tools, with a smattering of plumbing, electrical and lead casting molds if I’m seeing things correctly.

Looks like my Dads garage , or anyone who did all their own maintenance on house and cars . Most has little value , some guys, will buy them for wall hangers . Couldn’t give away my Dads , old machinists tools , inside ,outside mics, V blocks, certified angle blocks , depth gauges, taps, dies you name it .

Looks like it. The wooden box clasp keeps it contained in the box.

It's called an Optical Flat, ground to within nanos on one side.
You put it on a surface, shine a light on it, and it highlights the imperfections.

Very cool stuff you have there! I’m an airframe structures specialist and as an apprentice I was forced by my supervisors to use most of the tools you have there. It gave me a greater appreciation for my craft and those who came before my time.

Cool stuff, looks like my Dads workshop.
Not lead moulds but Pipe flaring clamps there, the 2 with the wing nuts. 2nd set pic 1. Nice brace and bit there. Plenty of taps and dies there. |

That's quite the find, Daniel. These must have a great story behind them! A lot of tools aren't made like they used to be. With regards to the wood working products I know that for some individuals or projects they prefer the vintage stuff.
It would be so cool if you also had a vintage tool chest (maybe that's what you mentioned earlier) that's period correct. Please keep the pictures and details coming |

Very cool stuff. Thanks for sharing. It would be fun to drill a hole with those manual crank drills and think back to how much the person was in awe when they first got it from the hardware store.
What caught my eye is the wood planer, I have a low cost one from Sears, not so good but it works. If that is of a certain brand (and I don’t know what they are) then it could be worth selling. I would instead look for a tight door at home and put it to use. The taps and dies are pretty cool, I have a cheap set from amazon that barely works to straighten out a couple of bolts and nuts (I’m an overtightener) And that cool glass thing in the Watertown box, I wonder if you could repurpose it for a watch, hard to scale from the pics, but it would be cool to clean it up and repurpose it for something. And those flat wrenches could come in handy, there are times when it’s hard to use a regular wrench because it’s too thick to fit where you need it. You are making me want to clean out my toolbox. Thanks for sharing...really cool stuff. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

OMG... those tools are beautiful. It's such a shame that tools like this are being lost and forgotten in today's hands-free society. I'm glad my dad taught me how to use tools and handed me down some unique ones. It's also very rewarding when you take on a big job, have the tools, learn the knowhow, and achieve something that normally would be intimidating to tackle. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you everyone. I enjoyed bringing them out of boxes and laying them out. Couldn't resist taking photos that I'm glad to have shared, but it was Tim who came to the rescue to help with posting them.

The company I work for uses them to check the flatness of our products within 2 helium light bands. It's less likely to scratch than other methods.
